Most of today's static web traffic consists of images. While many tools exist for preparing images for the web, such as Photoshop's "Save for Web" tool and a host of other existing resizing and compression tools and techniques, most have significant drawbacks - such as being limited to only one format - JPEG, PNG, or GIF.

Many tools exist to help mitigate this problem, but they tend to be oversimplified and force images down to a quality level, such as a quality setting of 70 for JPEG images, without taking into account that the optimizability of an image is very dependent on the content. Even after processing an image through such tools, we may find that most images can still save a significant number of bytes without perceptually affecting their visual detail.

At the same time, quality also needs to be considered; having an automated image optimization pipeline is useless, or at best extremely cumbersome, if the fidelity of the optimization results must be manually checked. If we can't trust an automated image optimization scheme 100%, we simply can't trust it and we're back to square one.
