YHA Australia is a purpose-built, membership-based organisation that has been providing low-cost, quality short-term accommodation to curious travellers for over 80 years. The global youth hostel movement began in rural Germany over a hundred years ago when teacher Richard Schirrmann took some students on a tour of the country. The first permanent hostel (still in business today, at Altena Castle) opened in 1912. In 1932, Hostelling International (HI), a global network of not-for-profit youth hostel associations, was founded. Momentum built and the first YHA hostel in Australia opened in 1939 in Warlandette, Victoria. Soon after, budget accommodation began to be offered around the country for young people to meet outdoors. Over the decades, hostels began to pop up in cities and bushland, growing the humble hostel into Australias largest and most popular accommodation network for independent travellers. Today, YHA Australia offers a wide range of accommodation options for students, digital nomads, working and holidaymakers, families and the young at heart - anyone with an adventurous spirit - to continue exploring and sharing the joy of travel with a like-minded community. We own, operate and partner with a wide range of properties across Australia, offering private and shared accommodation, with facilities such as on-site swimming pools, kitchens and open-air rooftops. We create unique, sustainable spaces in a safe, welcoming environment with just the right amount of modern comfort - giving you the freedom to explore. We dont believe in one size fits all and from bustling city destinations to off the beaten track, there is something for everyone - whether you live here or are just visiting. Imagine taking in Opera House views from the rooftop of YHA Sydney Harbour, or sleeping in a cell at the historic Fremantle Gaol, or hiking back to an eco-friendly accommodation in the heart of a national park. Our property staff are hosts, guides and most importantly, locals, helping you understand our destinations, culture and experiences - ensuring you feel part of the local community and make the most of your trip. We currently have 40 hostels across the country and are part of Hostelling International (HI), an organisation with over 3,000 unique places to stay in over 70 countries.
