The Geocities Animation GIF search engine is a special project of the Internet Archives. As part of our 20th anniversary, it aims to highlight and celebrate the interesting aspects of online archives and WayBack Machine.

Geocities is an early network custodian service that started in 1994 and was acquired by Yahoo in 1999. Users can use it to create their own custom website.The platform custody the page built by more than 38 million users, once the third largest website on the Internet.In 2009, Yahoo announced the closure of the service. At this time, the Internet Archives tried to archive as much content as possible.

We extracted more than 4,500,000 animation GIF (1,600,000 unique images), and then used the file name and directory path text to build a "full text" search engine.Each GIF is also linked to the original Geocities page embedded in it (some of these pages are even better than GIF).Geocities network files have been explored by other projects.
