UFC continues the rich history and competitive MMA tradition of Pankration, a Greek Olympic event dating back to 648 BC. About 80 years ago, a Brazilian mixed martial art called Vale Tudo (anything) sparked local interest in this sport. The UFC subsequently introduced organized and recognized mixed martial arts into the United States.

In order to further promote the health and safety of athletes, UFC collaborated with the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) to launch a historic comprehensive anti doping program in July 2015. In February 2016, UFC announced a five-year extension of its partnership with the Cleveland Clinic and donated $1 million to continue supporting research on the brain health of professional boxers. The focus of this study is to develop methods to detect the earliest and slightest signs of brain injury in athletes who have suffered from head trauma, and to determine which individuals are more likely to develop chronic neurological disorders.
In August 2016, UFC, along with strategic partners Silver Lake Partners and KKR, was acquired by global sports, entertainment, and fashion leader Endeavor, becoming the largest sports asset financial acquisition in history.
