Search.gov started from Internet entrepreneur Eric Brewer. His early research was funded by the Ministry of Defense. He is willing to donate a powerful search engine to the government. This donation accelerated the government's early efforts to create a government portal website.
In June 2000, President Clinton announced a donation to the Federal Search Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Brewer, and instructed the launch of an official US portal website within 90 days. USA.gov was launched on September 22, 2000 under the name FirstGov.gov, with a prominent search box for the public to easily search government websites. In 2010, Search.gov turned to open source software and expanded its usage to various government agencies in the United States.
