The University of Memphis was founded on September 10, 1912, formerly known as West Tennessee State Teachers College. It has undergone multiple name changes since then, with West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, Memphis State College in 1941, full university status in 1957, and Memphis State University in 1994
At present, the number of students at the University of Memphis exceeds 22000, including 16703 undergraduate students and 5209 graduate students. The main campus of the school covers an area of approximately 4.7 square kilometers, located about 8 kilometers east of the city center. The campus adopts a park style design, retaining many green lawns, and also includes a series of historical buildings from the early 20th century
Ranked 801-1000 in the 2024 THE World University Rankings and 1201-1400 in the 2023 QS World University Rankings
