A message from our co-founders

Discovered the Hardy Boys series in second grade. Ever since then, I've loved reading - both for fun and to sharpen my mind. I’m always looking for the next great book.

One afternoon, as I was browsing my friend’s bookshelf for inspiration, it occurred to me: When I want to know what book to read, I’d rather turn to my friends than to any random person or bestseller list.

So I decided to build a website — a place where I could see my friends’ bookshelves and see what they thought of all the books. My co-founder Elizabeth (now my wife) wrote the website copy, and I wrote the code. We started this in my living room, convinced that there was a better way to discover and discuss great books, and we could build it.

Goodreads is one such website. It’s a website where you can see what your friends are reading, and vice versa. You can create “bookshelves” to organize what you’ve read (or want to read). You can comment on each other’s reviews. You can find your next favorite book. On this journey with your friends, you can explore new areas, gather information, and expand your mind.

Knowledge is power, and power is best shared by readers.
