OpenMoji

Emojis are essential for daily communication. They are practical, interesting, and sometimes strange. For us, emojis are not just colorful images used to decorate interesting text messages. We believe they are an important and exciting part of the development: the return of graphic symbols to written communication. For the first time in history, communication can be achieved through a combination of letters and icons. Now, it has become feasible to say things that were previously impossible and convey meaning. Unfortunately, so far, the creative variety of emoticons is quite limited, especially compared to the astonishing number of available fonts. At present, there are only a dozen sets of emoticons, most of which come from large technology companies. These emoticons visually adapt to the appearance of their respective software platforms. In addition, the usage rights are usually very strict (such as the terms of use for Apple emojis).

That's why we developed OpenMoji as the first open-source and independent emoji system to date. When designing the OpenMoji system, we developed visual guidelines that are independent of specific brands. In addition, our goal is to design emoticons that are well integrated with text.

OpenMoji is an open-source project composed of over 50 students, 2 professors, and external contributors from HfG Schw ä bisch Gm ü nd (Design University).
