Chinese Film Encyclopedia is a public welfare knowledge website dedicated to the dissemination of film knowledge. It is the first encyclopedia knowledge site in China with film knowledge as its core. The website was created on October 15, 2006 and officially opened on December 28, 2006 (which is also the anniversary of the birth of movies). In September 2007, the website was upgraded and renamed as "Chinese Film Encyclopedia", and the domain name was determined.

In 2009, the website was managed by the School of Literature at Northeast Normal University. In June 2013, in view of the trend of international academic platforms gradually moving from paper media to electronic, the Chinese Film Encyclopedia website integrated the original film entry data and transformed it into a film academic website. The purpose of the website is to expand from introducing film encyclopedia knowledge to disseminating cutting-edge and hot film theories, film aesthetics, film academic trends and other professional film academic information at home and abroad. We hope to provide a professional and high-level online information platform for film and related students, film research scholars and film enthusiasts, and open a door for the general public to understand film professional knowledge.
At the same time, this website intends to establish friendly links with well-known film academic websites at home and abroad, hoping to become the first professional academic website in China with film as its core, and use it as a network platform to showcase research achievements in the field of film at home and abroad, strengthening the connection and interaction between domestic and foreign academia.
The Journal of Film Studies is an electronic academic publication on film co founded by the Chinese Film Encyclopedia and Cinephilia, and is supervised by the School of Literature at Northeast Normal University. The magazine currently has seven columns aimed at providing an electronic platform for students, teachers, researchers, and film enthusiasts in film related majors to understand academic information, exchange academic viewpoints, and promote excellent theoretical articles, making every effort to promote and facilitate the development of film academia.
In April 2015, the website was officially operated and managed by Jilin Miying Culture Media Co., Ltd. In September 2015, due to the transfer of founder Li Yang to work at the School of Arts, Peking University, the management of the Chinese Film Encyclopedia website and the "Maze Film Journal" was transferred to the School of Arts, Peking University.
