China University of Political Science and Law is a key "211 Project" university with law as its specialty and advantage, and also has political science, economics, management, literature, history, philosophy, education, science, engineering and other disciplines. It is also a key university of the "985 Project" Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform, "2011 Plan" and "111 Plan" (University Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Plan). It is a national "Double First-Class" university, directly under the Ministry of Education of China, and jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Beijing. It is committed to building a world-class university and first-class disciplines. There are two campuses on Xueyuan Road in Haidian District and Fuxue Road in Changping District.
The predecessor of the school was the Beijing Institute of Political Science and Law, which was formed in 1952 by combining the law, political science, sociology and other disciplines of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Yenching University and Fu Jen Catholic University. Comrade Mao Zedong personally wrote the name of the school. The school was originally run in the Red Building on Shatan, Beijing, and moved to College Road in 1954. In 1960, it became a national key university designated by the state. The school was closed during the "Cultural Revolution" and resumed in 1978. In 1983, the Beijing Institute of Political Science and Law merged with the Central Political and Legal Cadre School to form China University of Political Science and Law. Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the school. The school has formed a school and three colleges: undergraduate school, graduate school and advanced education college. The advanced education college was later renamed the Central Political and Legal Management Cadre College and was merged into China University of Political Science and Law in 2000. On May 3, 2017, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited China University of Political Science and Law and delivered an important speech, which provided a fundamental guideline and action guide for the construction and development of the school.
The school is known as "the highest institution of legal education in China". In the nearly 70 years of school-running history, the school has trained more than 300,000 outstanding talents of various types for the country. The school is the main force in the national legal education and legal talent training. It has participated in almost all the legislative activities of the country since its establishment, leading the innovation of national legal education, the reform of legal theory and the renewal of legal thought, and representing the country in foreign legal academic and legal cultural exchanges. At the same time, the school's multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary talent training model has also provided a large number of senior professionals in the humanities and social sciences to the society, becoming a new force in the training of talents in the fields of politics, economy, society, culture, etc.
The school currently has 18,143 students, including 9,719 mainland undergraduates, 7,642 mainland postgraduates, and 782 Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas students; 1,194 teachers in teaching and research positions, including 752 senior titles, 277 doctoral supervisors, and 694 master's supervisors. The proportion of doctoral and master's degree holders reached 96.40%.
The school has 19 teaching units, including the School of Law, the School of Civil and Commercial Economic Law, the School of International Law, the School of Criminal Justice, the School of Politics and Public Administration, the School of Business, the School of Humanities, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, the School of Social Sciences, the Guangming School of Journalism and Communication, the China-EU School of Law, the School of Master of Laws, the International Confucian School, the School of International Education/Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Education Center, the School of Continuing Education/School of Online Education, the Department of Science and Technology Teaching/School of Legal Information Management, the Department of Physical Education Teaching, and the Training School.
The school has 26 undergraduate majors, including law, investigation, political science and administration, administrative management, international politics, public utilities management, business administration, economics, international business, financial engineering, philosophy, Chinese language and literature, Chinese language, ideological and political education, sociology, social work, applied psychology, English, German, French, translation, journalism, network and new media, mathematics and applied mathematics, information management and information systems (legal information management), and information and computing science. Among them, law, political science and administration, and sociology are national specialty majors. The school has 39 doctoral degree authorization points, 76 master's degree authorization points, 11 professional master's degree authorization points and 4 postdoctoral research mobile stations. Law, political science, Marxist theory, and theoretical economics are first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, and philosophy, applied economics, sociology, psychology, foreign languages and literature, journalism and communication, Chinese history, business administration, and public administration are first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees. Among them, law is a first-level national key discipline, and political science is a first-level Beijing key discipline. Evidence science was selected into the list of high-tech disciplines in Beijing universities. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation, 9 first-level disciplines of the school participated in the evaluation and all made the list, among which law entered the A+ file.
The school is an "academic center in the field of humanities and social sciences in China", especially an important position for legal research, and is the only university "legislative contact point" of the National People's Congress Legal Affairs Committee. The school has established a special research institution for Xi Jinping's thoughts on the rule of law - Xi Jinping's Thought on the Rule of Law Research Institute. It currently has one philosophy and social science laboratory of the Ministry of Education (Data Rule of Law Research Institute), a national high-end think tank cultivation unit, a national human rights education and training base (Human Rights Research Institute), two key research bases of the Ministry of Education in humanities and social sciences (Litigation Law Research Institute, Legal History Research Institute), one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education (Evidence Science Research Institute), Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Base, Ministry of Education Youth Legal Education Base, Ministry of Education Teachers' Legal Education Research Center, Beijing Education Rule of Law Research Base (Rule of Law Government Research Institute), one direct contact unit of the National Higher Education Institutions Ancient Books Compilation and Research Working Committee of the Ministry of Education (Legal Ancient Books Compilation Research Institute), one Beijing Xi Jinping New Era Socialist Thought Research Center China University of Political Science and Law Base, one Beijing University Socialist Theory Research Collaborative Innovation Center, and nine high-level research bases jointly built with the Supreme People's Procuratorate and other provincial and ministerial state agencies. There are also nine important research institutions such as the Institute of Comparative Law, the Institute of Law and Economics, and the Institute of Globalization and Global Issues, and 12 new research institutions.
The school has fully implemented the international development strategy and continuously improved the level of international education. Every year, it sends more than a thousand teachers and students to study abroad through various cooperation and exchange programs, and invites hundreds of long-term and short-term foreign experts to give lectures at the school. The pattern of cultivating international talents has been initially formed. The school has established cooperative and exchange relations with 288 well-known universities, research institutions and international organizations in 55 countries and regions, joined international groups such as the Eurasian Pacific Alliance, the Global Law School Alliance, the China-Central and Eastern European Countries University Association, and the Asian Law Society, and initiated the establishment of the Mainland and Hong Kong and Macao Law Education Alliance. The school's China-Europe School of Law is the largest cooperation project between the Chinese government and the European Union in the field of legal education. The school cooperates with Washington University in St. Louis, USA to organize a dual master's degree program in international law, building a high-end platform for Sino-foreign cooperation in Sino-US legal education. The school has successively built 3 overseas Confucius Institutes in the UK, Romania and Barbados.
