Tianjin Open University

Tianjin Open University was founded in 1958. It is the first distance education institution in my country to use radio correspondence as the main teaching method. The school has gone through three stages: Tianjin Red and Expert Radio Correspondence University, Tianjin Radio Correspondence University and Tianjin Radio and Television University. On December 26, 2020, with the approval of the Tianjin Municipal People's Government, the school was renamed Tianjin Open University. Over the past 60 years since its establishment, the school has opened 80 undergraduate and junior college majors in 9 disciplines, trained nearly 400,000 undergraduate and junior college graduates, and provided social training and lifelong learning services for 54 million people.

The school currently has 52,000 students, including 14,000 undergraduates and 38,000 junior college students; there are 216 faculty and staff on the payroll, of which 32% have senior professional titles and 81% have master's degrees or above. The school consists of two campuses, Haiheyuan and Yingshuidao, covering an area of ​​74 mu and a building area of ​​48,000 square meters. The system has 30 branches, workstations and learning centers, 727 community and township learning points, forming a school-running system covering all districts, counties, streets (townships), major industries and key enterprises in the city. There are 1,520 faculty and staff in the whole system, of which 42.6% have senior professional titles; it covers an area of ​​870 mu and a building area of ​​670,000 square meters.

The school assumes the functions of Tianjin Community Education Guidance Center and Tianjin School Family Education Guidance Center, is responsible for the operation and management of Tianjin Education and Scientific Research Network, has a relatively complete distance education network, lifelong learning public service platform and lifelong education resource library, and has built Tianjin Digital Economy Talent Training Base, Tianjin Cross-border E-commerce Industrial Park and an open senior university that combines online and offline. The school actively builds an open and collaborative platform, and has hosted the Asian Open University (AAOU) Annual Conference and the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) World Conference, and participated in the East-West Vocational Education Cooperation and Tianjin-Xiong Vocational Education Cooperation Project.

Entering the new era, the school is guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implements the Party’s education policy, takes moral education as its foundation, takes “serving the learning of all people” as its purpose, implements the new development concept, continuously promotes comprehensive reform and high-quality sustainable development, and continuously meets the needs of Tianjin’s economic and social development. It comprehensively builds “three bases and one platform”, namely, the city’s high-quality applied talent training base, high-quality community education and elderly education demonstration base, high-level social training project incubation and promotion base, and a lifelong learning service platform for all people that combines online and offline, and strives to become an important carrier and support for Tianjin’s lifelong learning service system and learning city construction.
