Tianjin University of Technology is a multidisciplinary university with engineering as its main discipline, combining engineering and science, and coordinating the development of engineering, science, management, literature, and art. The school was formerly known as Tianjin Institute of Technology. In 1979, it began to recruit undergraduate students under the name of Tianjin University of Science and Technology Branch. It was officially established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. In 1996, the former Tianjin Institute of Technology merged with the three undergraduate colleges of the former Tianjin University Branch, Tianjin University Mechanical and Electrical Branch, and Tianjin University Metallurgical Branch to form the new Tianjin Institute of Technology. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Tianjin University of Technology in 2004.

The school is located at No. 391 Binshui West Road, Xiqing District, Tianjin, with a total area of ​​1.5942 million square meters and a building area of ​​769,600 square meters. There are more than 29,000 full-time students above the undergraduate level. There are 15 professional colleges, as well as institutions such as the Continuing Education College, Engineering Training Center, and Physical Education Department. There are 66 undergraduate majors, 22 first-level master's programs, 4 first-level doctoral programs (Materials Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Management Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering), 2 first-level postdoctoral research stations (Materials Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology), and 12 Tianjin key disciplines (Computer Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Control Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Cyberspace Security, Physics).

The school has been approved for 19 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 4 specialty majors of the Ministry of Education, 2 comprehensive reform pilot projects of the Ministry of Education's "Undergraduate Teaching Project", and 5 majors of the Ministry of Education's Excellence Plan; it has built 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching project, 3 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national "Undergraduate Teaching Project" college student off-campus practice education base construction projects; it has compiled 14 national-level high-quality and planned textbooks, approved the first batch of 3 national first-class undergraduate courses, 3 high-quality video open courses of the Ministry of Education and national high-quality resource sharing courses, and won 8 national teaching achievement awards. The school actively promotes the reform of engineering education, and 12 majors have passed the engineering education professional certification. The school has a college student activity center, gymnasium, track and field stadium, etc., with complete supporting facilities. The library has a construction area of ​​46,000 square meters, with more than 2.16 million paper books, 1.939 million electronic books, 34,000 electronic journals, and more than 60 high-level databases in Chinese and foreign languages.

The school focuses on the construction of scientific and technological innovation platforms. There are 1 national engineering laboratory, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 international cooperation joint research laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 demonstration base for the cultivation of innovative talents of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 joint innovation and introduction base of the Ministry of Education of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and 1 base for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education. It has been selected as a national intellectual property pilot university; there are 25 key laboratories, engineering centers, humanities and social science bases, and various think tanks in Tianjin. It takes the lead in building the "Xiqing University Science and Technology Park" in Tianjin, implements the strategy of strengthening the school with science and technology, and promotes self-reliance in science and technology. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 300 major, key, outstanding young, excellent young, key research and development projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, military-civilian integration and various national projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, invested more than 900 million yuan in research and development funds, and won a series of national and provincial science and technology awards; the total value of experimental instruments and equipment is 750 million yuan; the per capita scientific research funds and natural index are both among the top 100 in the country.

The school has a strong faculty. There are 1,910 faculty members, including 1,461 full-time teachers, 779 teachers with doctoral degrees, and 641 teachers with senior professional titles. There are 15 national leading talents such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, national outstanding young talents, national candidates for the Hundred Thousand Talents Project, and national teaching masters, and 155 provincial and ministerial talents such as Tianjin Outstanding Jinmen Scholars, Tianjin Distinguished Professors, Tianjin Special Support Plan Candidates, and Tianjin "131" Innovative Talent Training Project First Level Candidates, and 17 high-level innovation teams, providing strong talent support for the development of the school.

The school vigorously implements the internationalization strategy. It has established friendly cooperative relations with 137 well-known universities and research institutions in 36 countries and regions; it has carried out cooperative education at the undergraduate and graduate levels with universities in Canada, Japan and other countries, and trained the first batch of project management masters in my country; the "New Energy Materials" Innovation and Talent Introduction Base was selected into the "111 Plan" of the Ministry of Education and the National Foreign Experts; the school was approved as a Chinese government scholarship institution for international students to study in China; 3 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom were established in Poland, India and Côte d'Ivoire; the first Luban Workshop built by a general college was established in Côte d'Ivoire.
