The National Library of Ukraine was founded in April 1918 and adopts a system of general director responsibility for administration. The director is Anatoly G. Brovkin, who is a member of the International Library Federation. The library covers an area of 37000 square meters, among which the main building of the Vernadsky National Library is one of the most famous modernist buildings in Kiev, built in 1989. Its vertical part is a 27 story book storage area, and the reading room and office buildings are located in the horizontal part
The collection is rich, with 1.5 million volumes of books and periodicals, 2700 current issues, 444643 pages of manuscripts, 524 volumes of ancient editions, 44 types of dissertations, 203290 pages of sheet music, 40878 maps, 15764 microfilms, 430 audio-visual materials, 1832 recordings, 200 CD ROMs, 474000 patents, and 800000 volumes of journals
