DOS Games Archive was founded on June 27, 1998 by twin brothers Barthe and Jorrit Diepstraten, and has been dedicated to providing legitimate downloads of MS DOS operating system computer games for 28 years. The website opposes the practice of 'abandonware' and strictly reviews the legal status and distribution permissions of each added game. Some even obtain permission directly from the author or copyright holder, and all downloads are checked for the presence of adware, malware, and viruses.
The website has a rich development history. At the initial stage of its establishment, the Internet was still in its infancy. The website was simple and improved over time. From initially building with frameworks and hosting for free, to later registering domains, changing layouts, and adding features. In 1999, email communication was launched, the MS-DOS Game Alliance was established, and domain names were registered; Updated layout, added screenshots and advertisements in 2000; In 2001, DOS game CD was released; In 2003, the layout and download system were updated, and a forum was established; In 2009, it underwent a complete redesign and collaborated with GOG.com; Launched a customized content management system in 2014; Implemented online gaming functionality in 2016. Updated again in 2022, with server replacement and release of Dutch version in 2023, and German version in 2024. At present, the number of games on the website has reached 1627, which is quite influential in the DOS gaming field and will continue to develop in the future.
