Nankai University

Nankai University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education and the alma mater of the esteemed Premier Zhou Enlai. The school was founded in 1904 and founded in 1919 by modern patriotic educators Yan Xiu and Zhang Boling, who adhered to the concept of saving the country through education. In 1937, the campus was bombed by the invading Japanese army, and the school moved south to form the National Changsha Temporary University with Peking University and Tsinghua University. In 1938, it moved to Kunming and was renamed National Southwest Associated University. In 1946, he returned to Tianjin to resume his studies and became a national student. Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the development of schools has always received warm care from the Party and the state. Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the school name and personally inspected it; Premier Zhou Enlai provided guidance to his alma mater three times; Comrade Deng Xiaoping met with mathematical master Chen Xingshen and instructed the establishment of the Nankai Institute of Mathematics; Comrades Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao inspected Nankai successively. Especially since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly affirmed the development of Nankai and responded to and encouraged related work. He also visited Nankai on the occasion of the centenary celebration. After the nationwide adjustment of higher education departments in 1952, the university became a key national university that emphasized both arts and sciences. Since the reform and opening up, Tianjin University of Foreign Trade and China Tourism Management Cadre College have been successively merged. With the joint support of the Ministry of Education and Tianjin City, the school has developed into a comprehensive research-oriented university under the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" key construction. After the completion and opening of the new campus in September 2015, a "one school, three districts" educational pattern was initially formed for the Balitai campus, Jinnan campus, and Taida campus. In September 2017, the school was selected as a Class A university for the national "Double First Class" construction. The school adheres to the motto of "fair and capable, constantly changing", promotes the tradition of "patriotism, dedication, innovation, and happiness", and the concept of "governing the country with culture, strengthening the country with reason, and enriching the country with commerce". With the aim of "knowing China and serving China", the school takes outstanding alumnus Zhou Enlai as a model, cultivates talents, prospers academia, strengthens the country, inherits civilization, and strives to build a world-class university. The school covers an area of 4.4312 million square meters, including 1.216 million square meters for the Bali Tai campus, 2.4589 million square meters for the Jinnan campus, and 67200 square meters for the TEDA campus. The total area of the school building is 1.9533 million square meters. The school is one of the comprehensive and research-oriented universities in China with a complete range of disciplines. In the long-term process of running the school, it has formed the characteristics of emphasizing both arts and sciences, having a broad foundation, and highlighting application and innovation. The school has 27 professional colleges, covering disciplines such as literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, education, and arts. There are 6 disciplines under the national "Double First Class" construction, 6 national key disciplines for first level disciplines (covering 35 second level disciplines), 9 national key disciplines for second level disciplines, and 32 Tianjin key disciplines for first level disciplines. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, 14 disciplines entered the top 10%, of which 5 disciplines entered the top 5%; In the global disciplinary evaluation system, there are 15 disciplines in the top 1%, with chemistry and materials science entering the top 1 ‰. The school implements the fundamental task of cultivating morality and talents, attaches importance to the comprehensive development of students' morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor skills, deepens the promotion of education and teaching reform, and constructs a Nankai characteristic "public ability" quality education system. The school currently has 32599 students, including 16902 undergraduate students, 10966 master's students, and 4731 doctoral students. There are 96 undergraduate majors; There are 11 first level disciplines authorized for master's degrees and 25 authorized points for master's professional degrees; There are 31 first level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 1 second level doctoral program not covered by first level disciplines, and 2 doctoral professional degree authorization programs. There are 9 national bases for talent cultivation and scientific research in basic disciplines, 8 2.0 bases for training top-notch students in basic disciplines, 42 national first-class professional construction points, 7 "Strong Foundation Plan" majors, and more than 10 national level experimental teaching, textbook construction, cultural inheritance, innovation and entrepreneurship base platforms. Selected 31 national first-class undergraduate courses, awarded 7 national teaching master awards, evaluated 9 national teaching teams, and received 46 national teaching achievement awards. The school regards the construction of the teaching staff as a fundamental task, focusing on cultivating and nurturing a high-quality expert teacher team with strong political qualities, excellent professional abilities, and high levels of education. The school currently has 2245 full-time teachers, including 915 doctoral supervisors, 844 master's supervisors, 930 professors, and 864 associate professors. There are 13 academicians of the CAS Member, 3 academicians of the CAE Member, 8 academicians of the Academy of Sciences of developing countries, 28 leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 22 young top talents, 45 distinguished professors of the "Yangtze River Scholars Award Program" of the Ministry of Education, 27 young scholars, 62 winners of the "National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars", 46 winners of the "National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars", 32 winners of the "Ten Million Talents Program", 7 innovation research groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 10 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education. 21 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, 16 members of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and more than 40 chief scientists of major projects such as the 973 Program, 863 Program, and National Key R&D Program. The school adheres to the "four orientations", aiming at the forefront of world science and technology and major national needs, and vigorously strengthens basic research and original innovation. The university has two State Key Laboratory, one National Engineering Research Center, one national and local joint engineering research center, three 2011 collaborative innovation centers, more than 70 provincial and ministerial scientific research bases in natural sciences, and actively promotes the cultivation and construction of basic research centers and cross science centers. From 2007 to 2020, he won 7 "National Three Awards" as the first unit, among which the project led by academician Zhou Qilin won the first prize of the the State Natural Science Award in 2019. Since 2018, the Nankai scholar team has published 7 research papers in Science as the first completion unit. The school leverages its advantages as a key hub in philosophy and social sciences, actively serves the governance of the new era, and promotes the prosperity and development of cultural civilization. The school currently has more than 50 provincial and ministerial level humanities and social science research bases, innovation centers, laboratories, etc. It has been selected as one of the top universities in the country in terms of the number of philosophical and social science achievements in the library. A number of excellent think tanks have become "think tanks" and "talent pools" for national ministries and local governments. The school fully aligns with national and regional development strategies, actively integrates into the main battlefield of economic and social development, and establishes close cooperative relationships with a number of universities, enterprises, research institutes, and government departments. The school is based on the "two overall situations", continuously promoting high-level opening up to the outside world, and constantly expanding the school's international reputation and influence. We have established cooperative relationships with over 330 internationally renowned universities and academic institutions, conducting high-level exchanges and cooperation in areas such as teacher-student visits, joint training, and collaborative scientific research. The school currently has over 400 full-time and part-time foreign experts, and more than 2000 international students from 91 countries and regions studying on campus. Undertaking the construction of 8 overseas Confucius Institutes, including the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow in the UK, establishing an international joint research center with the University of Oxford in the UK, and maintaining close ties and deepening substantive cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, and the World Economic Forum. More than 10 internationally renowned figures, including Chen Shengshen, have been awarded honorary doctoral titles. Several Nobel laureates, international politicians, and others have been appointed as honorary professors at our university. A group of well-known scholars, politicians, and entrepreneurs at home and abroad have been appointed as guest professors and part-time professors at our university.
