IANA

IANA (Internet Digital Allocation Agency) is an organization responsible for coordinating the allocation of key resources of the global Internet. It plays an extremely important role in the infrastructure management of the Internet to ensure that all parts of the Internet can operate orderly and stably. In essence, IANA is like the resource administrator of the Internet, managing many numbers and names that are critical to the normal operation of the Internet.

The origin of IANA can be traced back to the early stage of Internet development. When the Internet was just emerging, a unified organization was needed to manage key resources such as IP addresses, DNS root zones, and so on, to avoid confusion and conflict. As a result, IANA came into being. At first, it mainly worked under the leadership of Jon Postel. With the continuous expansion of the Internet, its responsibilities and importance have become increasingly prominent.

We are responsible for coordinating some key elements to ensure the smooth operation of the Internet. Although the Internet is known as a global network without central coordination, some key parts of the Internet need global coordination in technology, and this coordination role is assumed by us.

Specifically, we assign and maintain a unique code and numbering system for the technical standards ("protocols") used to drive the Internet.

Our activities can be roughly divided into three categories:

• Domain Name

Manage DNS roots Int and. arpa domains, as well as IDN practical resources.

• Number resources

Coordinate the global IP and AS number pool, and mainly provide it to regional Internet registrars (RIRs).

• Protocol allocation

The numbering system of Internet protocols is jointly managed with the standards body.

We are one of the institutions with the longest history of the Internet. The functions of IANA can be traced back to the 1970s. Nowadays, services are provided by the Public Technology Identifier (PTI), an organization dedicated to providing IANA functions to the community. PTI is a subsidiary of ICANN, an international non-profit organization set up by the Internet community to coordinate our scope of responsibility.
