ITU: committed to connecting the world

ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs). The organization consists of 193 Member States and more than 1,000 companies, universities, and international and regional organizations. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with regional offices on all continents, ITU is the oldest institution in the United Nations family and has connected the world since the advent of the telegraph in 1865.

ITU: Committed to Connecting the World

We promote international connectivity of communication networks. We allocate global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develop technical standards that ensure seamless connectivity of networks and technologies, and work to improve access to digital technologies for underserved communities around the world. ITU is committed to bringing digital connectivity to all, providing a trusted multilateral platform for international agreements and standards, sharing knowledge, building capacity and promoting technology around the world with members and partners.

Technology has become the backbone of modern life. Networks and devices around the world rely on ITU's work. Every time we use our mobile phones, send an email, surf the internet, watch TV or streaming services, take a flight, check the weather forecast or use satellite imagery to navigate or explore, we rely on ITU's work. 2.6 billion people, mostly in developing countries, remain unconnected. ITU works to bridge this digital divide through universal connectivity and sustainable digital transformation.
