South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea was established in accordance with the Government Organization Act enacted and implemented on July 17, 1948, and is responsible for foreign policy, foreign economic policy, protection of overseas Chinese, evaluation of international relations, and overseas public affairs. After the establishment of the South Korean government on August 15, 1948, diplomatic relations were established and foreign missions were set up. On June 24, 1963, the Diplomatic Education Institute (EIFSO) was established under Cabinet Order No. 1358, directly reporting to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On January 5, 1965, according to Presidential Decree No. 2030, EIFSO was reorganized as the Institute of Diplomatic Studies (RIFA) as an educational institution to enhance the capabilities of diplomatic officials. On December 31, 1976, according to Presidential Decree No. 8377, RIFA was reorganized again as the Institute of Diplomacy and National Security Studies (IFANS). IFANS became the current KNDA (Korea National Diplomatic Academy) in 2012. After several stages of expansion, KNDA has become the largest research and training institution of its kind in the United States, serving as a think tank for foreign policy decision-makers and the birthplace of world-class diplomats.

In 1998, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs was reorganized into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and merged into the newly established Office of the Minister of Trade. It comprehensively formulated and implemented trade policies, negotiated trade agreements, and was responsible for various overseas economic affairs in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 15710 of February 28 and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Decree No. 1 of March 3.
