Jeff Nishinaka is a Los Angeles-based paper sculptor whose handmade works are commissioned by private and public companies and celebrities around the world. From the ethereal lines of mythological creatures to the geometric shapes of urban landscapes, Nishinaka creates monochrome relief objects inspired by fantasy and reality. His fascination with art began at a young age when he was a fan of Norman Rockwell, 1960s comics, Marvel Comics, and the Japanese manga Astro Boy. After attending UCLA, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the renowned Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

As an art student, paper became Nishinaka's medium of choice. Instead of choosing matchsticks, nails, or clay for his class projects, he challenged himself by creating multi-dimensional fish sculptures out of paper. During this creative process, he felt compelled to discover new ways to shape, bend, and round edges on different types of paper. He felt destined to become a paper artist.

Nishinaka’s work has been featured in numerous galleries, public art displays, retail displays, and advertising campaigns for clients such as Microsoft, Starbucks, Ralph Lauren, United Airlines, Clinique, MGM Studios, Lexus, Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Qualcomm, and Igersson Paperboard. He has created over 40 custom sculptures for martial arts expert and actor Jackie Chan. The artist attributes his successful 30-year career to his special relationship with paper. He feels the medium has its own energy and life, and it is his duty to release or reveal what is already there. He tries not to overwork or force the paper into submission, letting the paper’s beauty speak for itself. Each sculpture begins with an idea, a rough sketch, and research. When ready for construction, Nishinaka uses simple tools: pencil, X-Acto knife, dowels, tweezers, glue, and an eraser. Above all, his most precious tool is his hands. For him, the human touch lends a texture that cannot be achieved digitally. Nishinaka holds himself to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship, crafting each element of a structure with extreme precision, patience, and passion.

For Nishinaka, creating art for clients is just as fun as teaching it. He is an instructor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and says that "young minds" inspire and motivate him to continually perfect his skills.
