Why is it called Letterboxd?

Wikipedia defines mailbox mode as the practice of converting widescreen aspect ratio movies into standard width video format while preserving the original aspect ratio. Usually, this is achieved by adding masks (or "black bars") above and below the image area. Letterboxd is named after our love for widescreen formats and has nothing to do with things like orienteering or standing idly by in Me. There is some history here.
