Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and co-built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It is one of the first batch of "211 Project" construction universities. It is a key construction university of the "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project. It is a multidisciplinary, research-oriented university with information technology as its feature, engineering as its main body, and coordinated development of engineering, management, liberal arts and science. It is an important training base for information technology talents in my country. In 2017, the two discipline groups of "Information Network Science and Technology Discipline Group" and "Computer Science and Network Security Discipline Group" entered the ranks of first-class discipline construction.

The school has always cultivated the patriotic sentiment of "postal delivery across thousands of miles, the pulse of the country". Since its establishment in 1955, after more than 60 years of construction and development, the school's full-time education has formed a school-running pattern with a strong information background, distinctive professional characteristics, and outstanding disciplinary advantages. The school currently has 15 teaching units including the School of Information and Communication Engineering, the School of Electronic Engineering, the School of Computer Science (National Demonstration Software College), the School of Cyberspace Security, the School of Artificial Intelligence, the Modern Postal College (School of Automation), the School of Economics and Management, the School of Science, the School of Humanities, the School of Digital Media and Design Arts, the School of Marxism, the International College, the School of Online Education (School of Continuing Education), the School of Emergency Management, the Department of Physical Education, and a graduate school. The three first-level disciplines of the school, Information and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, and Electronic Science and Technology, were rated as Class A disciplines in the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, among which Information and Communication Engineering achieved an excellent score of A+.

The school currently has Haidian Campus and Changping Campus. There are more than 27,000 full-time undergraduate, master, doctoral and international students.

In recent years, the school has achieved good results in various selections at all levels, including the National 100 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations, National Excellent Courses, Beijing Excellent Courses, National Bilingual Teaching Demonstration Courses, General Higher Education Excellent Textbooks, National Teaching Teams, Beijing Excellent Teaching Teams, National Education Achievement Awards, and Beijing Education Achievement Awards. For a long time, the school's student employment rate has remained at the leading level among universities nationwide. It has achieved excellent results in major domestic and international college student competitions represented by English, electronics, mathematics and physics competitions, ranking among the top national key universities. ——Always adhere to the guiding ideology of running schools with teachers as the foundation, deepen the strategy of strengthening schools with talents, and continuously expand the talent team and optimize the faculty structure. At present, the school has a strong faculty team with academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, foreign academicians, selected candidates for national major talent projects or talent projects, winners of national and provincial and ministerial teaching awards, and experts with special government allowances as the backbone. Teachers with doctoral and master's degrees account for 96% of the total number of full-time teachers, and there are nearly 100 foreign teachers. ——Focusing on the construction of "Double First-Class", we will continue to strengthen discipline construction and further optimize the discipline layout. At present, the school has 11 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 24 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees (including 11 first-level discipline doctoral degrees), 1 professional degree doctoral degree, 12 professional master's degree authorization points, 51 undergraduate majors, and 7 postdoctoral research mobile stations. The disciplines cover 8 disciplines, including science, engineering, literature, law, economics, management, education, and art, and have initially formed a multi-disciplinary discipline framework with outstanding advantages in information disciplines and mutual support between engineering, management, liberal arts, and science. In terms of key discipline construction, the school currently has 2 national key disciplines at the first level, 16 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 7 Beijing first-class undergraduate major construction sites.

——Strengthen base construction and develop scientific research work in a healthy manner. The school has built a number of high-level scientific research bases represented by national key laboratories, national engineering research centers, key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, and engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education. The school currently has 2 national key laboratories, 2 national engineering research centers, 4 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 Beijing laboratory, 5 Beijing key laboratories, and 10 other ministerial scientific research bases. Based on base construction and team building, the school's scientific research work has shown a rapid growth trend in both quality and quantity. In recent years, it has won dozens of national science and technology invention awards, national science and technology progress awards, and provincial and ministerial scientific research awards. At the same time, the school has built a national university science and technology park, which has laid a good foundation for promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

——Strengthen international cooperation and exchanges, and further improve the level of internationalization of school management. The school has established deep cooperation and exchange relations with nearly 200 well-known universities, research institutions and well-known enterprises at home and abroad, and has established in-depth cooperation with industry-specific international organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union. Actively hosting high-level and high-standard international conferences, building an academic exchange platform between the school and international high-level universities, enhancing the academic exchanges and dialogues between the school and international high-level universities, and further enhancing the school's international influence. In 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school began to implement a joint bachelor's degree training program with Queen Mary College, University of London, and established an international college. In recent years, the International College has been widely praised by the whole society for its strict management and high-level talent training quality. In 2011, the school cooperated with the University of the South Pacific in Fiji to build a Confucius Institute. At present, it has formed a "three countries and four places" school-running pattern and has been rated as a global model Confucius Institute. In 2017, the Cook Islands Confucius Classroom was awarded the title of "Advanced Confucius Classroom". In 2020, the school was approved to jointly build a Sino-foreign cooperative education institution with Queen Mary University of London, and established the Confucius Institute of Queen Mary University of London.
