Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, the Beijing Municipal People's Government and China National Railway Group Co., Ltd. It is a national "211 Project", "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" and "Double First-Class" construction university.

As one of the three sources of Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University has a history dating back to 1896. Its predecessor was the Railway Management Training Institute founded by the Qing government. It is the first higher education institution in China that specializes in training management talents and the birthplace of modern railway management and telecommunications education in China. In 1917, it was reorganized into the Railway Management School and the Post and Telecommunications School. In 1921, it merged with the Shanghai Industrial Special School and the Tangshan Industrial Special School to form the Jiaotong University. After the reorganization of Jiaotong University in 1923, the school was renamed Beijing Jiaotong University. In 1950, the school was named Northern Jiaotong University. Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school. Mao Yisheng, a famous bridge expert, served as the president. In 1952, Northern Jiaotong University was abolished and the school was renamed Beijing Railway Institute. In 1970, the name of "Northern Jiaotong University" was restored. In 2000, it merged with Beijing Electric Power College and was transferred from the Ministry of Railways to the direct management of the Ministry of Education. In 2003, the name of "Beijing Jiaotong University" was restored. The school has trained Liu Han, the founder of China's first wireless radio station, Jin Shixuan, the author of China's first railway transportation monograph, Xu Jing, the pioneer of China's railway transportation economics discipline, Yang Rumei, one of the earliest four accountants in China, and Zheng Zhenduo, a modern Chinese writer, literary critic, and literary historian, and a large number of outstanding talents who are famous both at home and abroad. Ying Shangcai, the designer of China's first high-horsepower steam engine, Xiang Zhejun, the Chinese prosecutor of the "Tokyo Trial", and Ma Yinchu, a famous Chinese economist and demographer, have all taught at the school.

The school has two campuses in Haidian District, Beijing, known as the "university resort", with a total area of ​​nearly 1,000 acres and a building area of ​​more than 1 million square meters; the Weihai Campus is built in Weihai City, Shandong Province, covering an area of ​​more than 1,000 acres; each campus has complete teaching and scientific research facilities and a beautiful campus environment. The Beijing Jiaotong University Seaside Rail Transit Comprehensive R&D Experimental Base is built in Huanghua City, Hebei Province; the world-class Fengtai Rail Transit "Industry-University-Research-Application" Integrated Innovation Base is built in Fengtai District, Beijing; the Tangshan Research Institute is established in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, focusing on creating a demonstration area for technology research and development, achievement transformation and international education and training.

After two centuries of development, the school has formed a complete discipline training system with advantages in information, management and other disciplines, and transportation science and technology as its characteristics, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, management, economics, science, literature, law, and philosophy. The first round of construction tasks of the "Double First-Class" - the construction of the first-class discipline field of "Smart Transportation" was completed with high quality.
