Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology was founded in 1978. It is a general higher education institution with engineering as its main discipline, and with a multi-disciplinary penetration of engineering, science, management, economics, and liberal arts, and with distinctive engineering practice characteristics. The school developed from the Second Branch of Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology and Beijing Petrochemical College. It was renamed in 1992. In 2000, it was transferred from Sinopec Group to Beijing for management. It has successively cooperated with Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing University of Technology and other universities to train postgraduates throughout the whole process. In 2011, it became a master's degree postgraduate training unit relying on the "Service National Special Needs Talent Training Project". In 2018, it was approved as a Beijing doctoral degree awarding project construction unit. The school adheres to the school-running philosophy of "advocating practice, emphasizing both knowledge and practice", adheres to the school spirit of "unity, diligence, truth-seeking, and innovation", inherits the school-running characteristics of educating people through practice, and strives to create a cradle of engineers in the first-class district of the new era, and build a distinctive and high-level applied university.

The school has 11 teaching colleges (departments), with 6 first-level disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees, including materials science and engineering, control science and engineering, mechanical engineering, business administration, chemical engineering and technology, and environmental science and engineering, 7 master's professional degree authorization categories, including materials and chemical engineering, auditing, electronic information, machinery, resources and environment, energy and power, biology and pharmaceuticals, 38 undergraduate majors and 1 postdoctoral research workstation. There are 8,000 full-time students, including 780 master's students. There are 822 faculty and staff, including 549 full-time teachers, 63% of whom are doctoral teachers, and 32% of whom are "dual-qualified" teachers; in addition, 72 engineering and technical personnel from enterprises and research institutes are employed. The school insists on talent training as the core, constantly explores new models of talent training, deepens education and teaching reforms, improves the education system of comprehensive moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor training, and promotes full-staff, full-process and all-round education. The school is a pilot university for CDIO engineering education reform of the Ministry of Education, and joined the CDIO International Cooperation Organization in 2012; it is the first batch of pilot universities for the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, a demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Beijing, and a university with high-level athlete enrollment qualifications. The school will carry out practical education throughout the entire process of talent training, adhere to the enterprise-oriented and front-line service, and always take the training of high-quality application-oriented talents as the training goal. It has successively built talent training bases with 181 enterprises and institutions such as Yanshan Petrochemical and Zhongguancun Software Park, and established a "cooperative win-win, long-term and stable" mechanism for education between government, industry, academia, research and application. The school is a national industry-university-research cooperative education experimental base and a Beijing-level college student quality education base construction unit. In recent years, students have participated in various national and Beijing discipline competitions and innovation and entrepreneurship competitions with high enthusiasm and wide participation, and have achieved excellent results in competitions such as "Internet+", "Challenge Cup", "Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction", electronic design, chemical design, and intelligent robots. The engineering practice ability of graduates has been widely praised by employers.

The school takes discipline construction as the leader, energy science and technology innovation and urban safe operation as the main line, and vigorously improves its scientific and technological innovation capabilities. There are currently 1 Beijing high-tech construction discipline, 4 Beijing key construction disciplines, 5 Beijing key laboratories, 1 Beijing Higher Education Engineering Research Center, 1 Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Base, 10 school-level key scientific research institutions, and the Capital Clean Energy (Oil and Gas) Supply and Use Safety Assurance Technology Collaborative Innovation Center, Zhongguancun Energy Engineering Intelligent Equipment Industry Technology Research Institute, and Beijing Safety Production Engineering Technology Research Institute. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the university has undertaken 75 new national-level projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, the National Science and Technology Support Plan, the National Science and Technology Major Project, and the National Key R&D Plan. It has also undertaken 88 new provincial and ministerial projects such as the Beijing Science and Technology Plan and the Beijing Natural Science Foundation. It has undertaken 795 new horizontal projects for enterprises, 26 new scientific research achievements awards at the provincial and ministerial level and industry associations, and 263 new national authorized invention patents.

The university has promoted open education in all aspects. Focusing on the construction and development of Beijing's high-tech industries and industries, it has pragmatically promoted cooperation with Daxing District, Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone, Beijing Emergency Management Bureau, Biomedicine Base, and various parks, industries, and enterprises. The school has complete infrastructure and excellent school conditions. The three campuses of Qingyuan, Kangzhuang and Yanshan have a total area of ​​466 acres, a school building area of ​​264,000 square meters, a total value of 660 million yuan for teaching and scientific research equipment, 980,000 paper books, and 1.24 million electronic books.
