Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is a national key university with Chinese medicine as its main discipline. It is directly under the management of the Ministry of Education and is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Beijing. The current party secretary of the school is Gu Xiaohong and the president is Xu Anlong.

Beijing University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1956. Its predecessor was Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the earliest higher Chinese medicine college approved by the State Council. In 1960, it was designated as a national key university by the central government; in 1993, it was renamed Beijing University of Chinese Medicine; in 1996, it was selected as a key university in the national "211 Project"; in 2000, it merged with Beijing Acupuncture and Orthopedics College to form the new Beijing University of Chinese Medicine; in 2011, it was selected as a national "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" construction university; in 2017, three disciplines of Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and Chinese pharmacy were selected into the list of national "Double First-Class" construction disciplines; in 2018, it became the chairman unit of the new teaching guidance committee for Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese and Western medicine majors of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education. In 2020, it was awarded the "National Civilized Campus". The school currently has three campuses, namely Liangxiang Campus, Heping Street Campus and Wangjing Campus.

In the long-term practice of running schools, the school has adhered to the school motto of "diligent in learning, virtuous and helpful", advocated the concept of "people's heart to learn, inheritance and innovation", adhered to the purpose of "establishing morality and educating people, educating people with culture", and carried forward the spirit of "pursuing excellence and stopping at perfection", highlighting its characteristics and strengthening its advantages. It is an education base for cultivating high-level innovative Chinese medicine talents in my country, a demonstration base for higher Chinese medicine education reform, a research base for Chinese medicine knowledge innovation and technological innovation, a medical base for preventing and treating major diseases and difficult diseases, a humanistic base for promoting excellent traditional culture, and an international exchange base for promoting Chinese medicine to the world. It has made important contributions to the development of human health and the progress of civilization, and has become a famous Chinese medicine higher education institution with a high reputation at home and abroad, integrating education, scientific research, medical treatment, and Chinese medicine culture communication.

The school (including directly affiliated hospitals) currently has 6,032 faculty and staff, 1,611 full-time teachers, of which 60.34% hold senior professional and technical positions. The school has 2 "Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering" and 6 "Masters of Traditional Chinese Medicine", and has a teaching staff composed of famous experts and scholars at home and abroad and outstanding young and middle-aged teachers.

The school adheres to the fundamental task of cultivating morality and educating people, pays attention to drawing nutrition from the rich soil of Chinese culture and traditional Chinese medicine culture, and integrates the concept of "cultivating people with culture" throughout the work of educating people, cultivating socialist builders and successors with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor. There are 15,166 full-time students, including 5,683 postgraduates and 8,894 undergraduates. There are also 38 part-time postgraduates, 295 continuing education students, and 32,466 online education students.

The school is committed to building a talent training system with high-level education as the main focus for the future. At present, it has 16 undergraduate majors, including Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine pharmacy, pharmacy, acupuncture and massage, rehabilitation therapy, public utilities management, business administration, pharmaceutical management, nursing, English, law, bioengineering, Chinese and Western clinical medicine, big data management and application, and Chinese medicine orthopedics.

The school is one of the first batch of units in the country's higher Chinese medicine colleges to establish doctoral degree programs and postdoctoral research mobile stations. It has 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations in Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine. It has 3 first-level disciplines with doctoral degree authorization, including 42 second-level disciplines with doctoral degree authorization, 7 first-level disciplines with master's degree authorization, including 47 master's degree authorization. The school currently has 2 first-level national key disciplines, covering 15 second-level national key disciplines, 48 ​​key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 first-level Beijing key disciplines, 8 second-level Beijing key disciplines, and 2 Beijing high-tech disciplines.

The school currently has 6 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 10 national first-class undergraduate courses, 3 national teaching teams, 1 basic discipline top student training plan 2.0 base, 4 national curriculum ideological and political teaching teams, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone, and 3 national college students' off-campus practical education bases. The school won 1 first prize and 6 second prizes in the national teaching achievement award, 13 first prizes and 21 second prizes in the Beijing teaching achievement award.

The school currently has 56 scientific research bases at the provincial and ministerial levels or above. Among them, there are 3 national international science and technology cooperation bases, 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 3 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 4 discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases for higher education institutions, 2 national TCM clinical research bases, 14 third-level laboratories of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 10 key research rooms of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 TCM regulatory science research base of the State Drug Administration, 1 key laboratory of the State Drug Administration, 1 Taiwan TCM research base of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, 6 key laboratories of Beijing, 1 engineering research center of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, 6 international science and technology cooperation bases of Beijing, and 1 Beijing TCM culture research base. The school has won 9 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The research results of TCM constitution identification were included in the "National Basic Public Health Service Standards" as the only TCM results, and the "Standards for TCM Diagnosis and Efficacy Evaluation of Stroke" became the TCM industry standard and national standard. "Moxibustion Moxa" and "Part 3 of TCM Four Diagnosis Operation Specifications: Diagnosis" have become national standards.

The university currently has teaching units such as the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the College of Chinese Medicine, the College of Life Sciences, the College of Acupuncture and Massage, the Qihuang College, the College of Management, the College of Nursing, the College of Humanities, the College of Marxism, the College of National Studies, the Department of International and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs (International College, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao), the Department of Continuing Education, and the Department of Physical Education. It currently has school-level research institutions such as the Beijing Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the National Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution and Prevention of Diseases of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, the National Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Development and Strategy of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and the National Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine Higher Education of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.

The university currently has three directly affiliated hospitals, including the First Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Dongzhimen Hospital), the Second Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Oriental Hospital), and the Third Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Third Affiliated Hospital), and the National Medical Hall Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic. In recent years, the school has followed the principle of "guiding the focus of medical and health work to move downward and sink resources", explored new models of cooperation and co-construction, built a regional landmark high-quality TCM service platform, and established the Fourth Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Zaozhuang Hospital), the Fifth Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Shenzhen Hospital), the Sixth Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Fangshan Hospital), the Seventh Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Sun Simiao Hospital) and the Eighth Clinical Medical College (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Xiamen Hospital). There are also 17 clinical teaching bases such as the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Guang'anmen Hospital, Xiyuan Hospital, Wangjing Hospital, and Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which are responsible for clinical teaching, internships, and internships for all students in the school. The school currently has 17 national clinical key specialties and 44 key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There are 6 inheritance studios of national medical masters, 3 inheritance studios of national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, 2 inheritance studios of national TCM academic schools, and 43 inheritance studios of national famous old TCM experts, and 44 two-room and one-station "3+3 Project of Inheritance of Torch" of Beijing TCM.

At the beginning of its establishment, the school became the first higher Chinese medicine college in New China to accept foreign students to study Chinese medicine. So far, it has trained more than 20,000 Chinese medicine professionals for 94 countries and regions, and has established cooperative relations with 118 well-known universities and research institutions in 31 countries and regions. In 1996, in cooperation with Middlesex University in the UK, the first independent medical bachelor's degree program in a foreign university was established in my country. It was the first to offer undergraduate education in Chinese medicine among the top 50 universities in the world, and cooperated with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore to offer a double bachelor's degree in "Chinese Medicine-Biology". In cooperation with the Medical School of the University of Barcelona in Spain, the first master's degree program in Chinese medicine recognized by the European Union was opened. The first doctoral degree program and master's degree program for Western doctors to study Chinese medicine taught entirely in English were opened in my country, and the first bachelor's degree program in Chinese medicine taught entirely in English was opened. In 2019, in cooperation with the National Children's Hospital in the United States, a pediatric clinic combining Chinese and Western medicine with Chinese medicine characteristics was built in the United States, continuously promoting the integration and development of traditional medicine and modern medicine.

In 1991, the university established the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Kützting Chinese Medicine Hospital in Germany, setting a precedent for Chinese universities to run Chinese medicine hospitals overseas and becoming a model for Chinese medicine to go global. The school's international development has been constantly exploring and innovating, and it pioneered the "Overseas Chinese Medicine Center" that integrates medical care, education, scientific research and cultural communication, providing an effective "Beijing Chinese Medicine Program" for the overseas development of Chinese medicine. It has successively established the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Australian Chinese Medicine Center, the Russian Chinese Medicine Center, the American Chinese Medicine Center, and the China-Germany Chinese Medicine Center (Kützting), making Chinese medicine a bright business card for cultural exchanges and people-to-people exchanges between China and foreign countries. The Russian Chinese Medicine Center has successfully obtained the qualification of a Russian federal medical institution and has become the first Chinese medicine hospital in Russia to be included in the national medical insurance system. The Australian Chinese Medicine Center actively promotes Chinese medicine academic education for Western doctors, and two classes of Chinese medicine master's students have successfully graduated. The American Chinese Medicine Center aims at the characteristics of Chinese medicine and the forefront of medicine, and has successfully held many high-end academic conferences on cancer, epilepsy, pediatric diseases, reproductive diseases, etc., and is becoming an important platform for academic exchanges and dialogues between China and the United States in the field of medicine.

The school hosts four high-level academic journals, namely, Journal of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Modern Clinical Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Education and Journal of Chinese Medicine Science (English), which are important academic exchanges and publicity and promotion platforms for Chinese medicine education, scientific research, and medical treatment. Journal of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine was selected into the core, science and technology core and CSCD databases of Peking University, and was selected into the catalog of T1-level excellent Chinese medicine science and technology journals and the World Impact Index (WJCI) Report. It was awarded the titles of "China's Excellent Science and Technology Journal (F5000)", "China's Excellent Science and Technology Journal", "China's Top 100 Science and Technology Journals" and "100 Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals".
