Tianjin University of Science and Technology is located on the coast of Bohai Sea and Haihe River. It is a key university jointly built by the central and local governments and Tianjin. It is a multidisciplinary university with engineering as the main discipline and coordinated development of engineering, science, literature, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, and art. It is a "double first-class" construction university in Tianjin, the first batch of universities approved by the State Council to have the right to confer master's degrees, the second batch of universities with the right to confer doctoral degrees, and the first batch of universities that can accept foreign students. It is the only university in Tianjin Binhai New Area with a complete undergraduate, master's, and doctoral education system. For more than 60 years since its establishment, the school has been based on light industry and serving the society, based in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, and facing the whole country, forming a fine tradition of "persisting in expanding the characteristics of light industry, carefully cultivating the backbone of the industry, and serving the national economy and people's livelihood." The school actively responds to the national strategy of coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei and the development and opening up of Binhai New Area, strengthens strategic cooperation with regional and industry enterprises, and strives to contribute to regional development and industry progress.

I. Historical evolution

The school was founded in 1958, then named Hebei Institute of Light Industry. It is one of the first four undergraduate colleges of light industry in my country and was once affiliated with the former Ministry of Light Industry of China. In 1959, the main faculty and laboratory equipment of the pulp and paper major of Tianjin University were transferred to our school, becoming the main force of this major in our school. In 1964, during the professional adjustment of the Ministry of Light Industry to the affiliated colleges, the fermentation engineering major of the former Beijing Institute of Light Industry and the plastic molding and processing major of the former Wuxi Institute of Light Industry were successively transferred to our school. In 1968, the school was renamed Tianjin Institute of Light Industry. In 1971, all the pulp and paper majors of Tianjin University were transferred to our school. In 1972, the salt chemical major of the former Beijing Institute of Light Industry and the Tanggu Salt Industry College of the Ministry of Light Industry, which enjoys the reputation of "Salt Industry Huangpu", were merged and assigned to our school. Since the reform and opening up, the university has entered a period of rapid development, with remarkable achievements in discipline and professional construction. In 1981, the pulp and paper engineering discipline became the first batch of master's degree authorization points approved by the Ministry of Education, and in 1983, it became the second batch of doctoral degree authorization points approved by the Ministry of Education. It is the first doctoral degree authorization point in the same discipline in the country. In 1998, the management system of the university was changed to co-construction by the central and local governments, with Tianjin as the main management. In 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university was renamed Tianjin University of Science and Technology. In 2004, the Binhai Campus was built and put into use in Binhai New Area, the forefront of the country's opening up to the outside world. In 2006, six complete colleges including food, biology, ocean, and chemical engineering were moved to the Binhai Campus as a whole. In 2008, the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission and the People's Government of Binhai New Area signed the "Agreement on Further Supporting the Development of Binhai New Area by Science and Technology Education", which determined that the University of Science and Technology would further expand its scale of operation in Binhai New Area, adjust disciplines and majors, and move its overall strategy eastward. In 2013, the former Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Zone Vocational and Technical College was incorporated, further expanding the scale of operation of the Binhai Campus. In 2018, the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission and the People's Government of Binhai New Area signed the "Strategic Cooperation Agreement on the Joint Construction of Tianjin University of Science and Technology", and the school's development entered the fast lane.

The school currently has two campuses, Binhai and Hexi. Among them, the Binhai main campus is located in "Bincheng", one of the twin cities of Tianjin, adjacent to Binhai-Zhongguancun Science Park, Sino-Singapore Eco-City, National Maritime Museum, TEDA Aircraft Carrier Theme Park, Tanggu Forest Park, etc.; Hexi Campus is located in Haihe Liulin area, one of the sub-centers of Tianjin City, adjacent to Tianjin Cultural Center, International Design Center, National Convention and Exhibition Center, Binhai International Airport, Haihe Education Park, etc. The school covers a total area of ​​about 2,300 acres, with more than 26,000 full-time undergraduate, master and doctoral students, a library collection of 1.95 million books, teaching and scientific research equipment with a total value of 718 million yuan, complete sports venues and special training facilities, a high-level campus network, and various living facilities.

  1. Faculty

The school attaches great importance to the construction of the faculty. By continuously increasing the efforts to introduce and cultivate talents, it has formed a faculty with high moral character, superb professional skills, reasonable structure and vitality. There are more than 2,100 faculty members, including more than 1,400 full-time teachers and 794 doctoral and master's tutors. There are more than 20 national talents including 5 dual-appointed academicians, candidates for the National Special Support Plan, national candidates for the Hundred Thousand Talents Project, and national teaching masters, more than 100 provincial and ministerial talents including Tianjin Outstanding Talents, Tianjin Outstanding Jinmen Scholars, and Tianjin Distinguished Professors, and more than 30 national and provincial high-level teaching and research teams such as the Ministry of Education Innovation Team (including cultivation). In recent years, the school has continuously strengthened the ideological and political education of the teaching staff, strengthened the construction of teachers' ethics and style, further improved the evaluation system of teachers' ethics and style, conscientiously implemented the "Overall Plan for Deepening Education Evaluation Reform in the New Era", and actively promoted the reform of professional and technical positions. It has won the "National Innovation Award", and a group of outstanding teachers, teaching masters and advanced collectives and individuals in the construction of teachers' ethics have emerged, such as "National Teaching Master", "National Excellent Teacher", "National Excellent Science and Technology Worker", and "National Excellent Ideological and Political Worker".

III. Professional disciplines

The school currently has 14 professional colleges and 71 undergraduate majors, including: 12 majors such as bioengineering, food science and engineering, light chemical engineering, packaging engineering, chemical engineering and technology, polymer materials and engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, environmental science, process equipment and control, industrial design, financial management, and logistics management have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 11 majors such as software engineering and automation have been selected as Tianjin first-class undergraduate major construction sites; Food Science and Engineering has passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification and the American Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFT) certification; Chemical Engineering and Technology enjoys the reputation of "Salt Industry Huangpu" and has passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification; Bioengineering has passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification; Packaging Engineering has ranked first in the country for 9 consecutive years in the "China University and Discipline Professional Evaluation Report".

The school has distinctive characteristics. It has established the national key discipline of "Fermentation Engineering". There are 4 first-level doctoral degree authorization points in light industry technology and engineering, food science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, and mechanical engineering, as well as a doctoral degree authorization point in biology and medicine, 20 first-level master's degree authorization points and 12 master's professional degree authorization categories. It has two top disciplines in Tianjin, light industry technology and engineering and food science and engineering, and 6 service industry characteristic discipline groups, including industrial biotechnology, medicine and food homology, new chemical materials, intelligent light industry equipment manufacturing, comprehensive utilization of offshore seawater resources and environmental protection, and big data and smart cars. Four disciplines, namely agricultural science, chemistry, biology and biochemistry, and engineering, are in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, the two disciplines of light industry technology and engineering and food science and engineering ranked third and eighth respectively among the 24 and 79 participating universities in the country.

IV. Education and Teaching

The school regards improving the quality of education and teaching as the lifeline of undergraduate teaching, adheres to the "student-oriented" and "quality-based school", firmly establishes the idea of ​​quality first, strengthens the education and teaching concept of teaching and educating people, focusing on the basics and students, and actively promotes education and teaching reform. It took the lead in launching the reform of the full credit system in Tianjin, and introduced a series of new measures such as the elective system, flexible academic system, tutor system, and credit mutual recognition system. Establish a "new structure" for undergraduate majors, implement a "new model" for talent training, explore "new methods" for education and teaching, build a "new system" for student quality, and establish a "ten plus one" education system and a teaching quality assurance and monitoring system. As a university implementing the "Excellent Engineer" education and training plan of the Ministry of Education, it selects outstanding students from freshmen every year to enter the "Industry Excellent Talent Experimental Class" to cultivate top innovative talents and reserve leading talents in the industry. Continuously deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education, and students have repeatedly achieved good results in domestic and international innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. Attach great importance to students' employment and entrepreneurship, improve the employment and entrepreneurship guidance service system, and graduates are widely praised by employers. In order to help solve the talent shortage problem in Hainan's ethnic minority areas and promote the economic and social development of Hainan's ethnic minority areas, Tianjin University of Science and Technology signed a provincial-school cooperation agreement with the Hainan Provincial People's Government and the Provincial Department of Education in 2006, and determined to set up a special recruitment class for Hainan's ethnic minority areas to train 40 students for Hainan's ethnic minority areas every year.

In recent years, it has won 5 national teaching achievement awards, 2 national teaching teams, 1 national teaching master, 12 national first-class majors, and built 1 national online open course, 2 national video open courses, 3 national resource sharing courses, 1 national bilingual teaching demonstration course, 6 national first-class courses, and 62 Tianjin first-class courses; it has built 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 national virtual simulation experimental centers (projects), 2 national engineering practice education centers, 1 national college student off-campus practice education base, 14 Tianjin experimental teaching demonstration centers (including construction units), and 15 Tianjin virtual simulation experimental teaching projects. The school attaches great importance to the internationalization of graduate education and has signed cooperation agreements for joint training of master's students with relevant universities in many countries. The number of graduate students increases year by year. In 2021, 1,840 master's and doctoral students were admitted, the total number of graduate students in school reached 4,941, and a total of more than 13,000 doctoral and master's degrees were awarded. There are 9 joint training bases for professional degree graduate students in Tianjin universities, and 1 national engineering master education demonstration practice base has been approved.

V. Scientific Research

The school attaches great importance to scientific research and achievement transformation, and encourages high-level scientific research platforms to serve undergraduate teaching. In accordance with the requirements of the school's "top-level design", it vigorously promotes the implementation of the "Strengthening School Plan", and has gradually built a four-in-one scientific and technological work innovation system of "policy, platform, project, and talent", and has achieved remarkable results in large platforms, large projects, and large achievements. In recent years, our university has continued to develop its scientific and technological platforms. There are 41 scientific research platforms at the provincial and ministerial levels, including the National Key Laboratory of Food Nutrition and Safety, the National New Rural Development Research Institute, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Metabolic Control Fermentation Technology, the National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Food Nutrition and Safety and Medicinal Chemistry, and the National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Big Health Biotechnology. There are also 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 6 key laboratories of Tianjin, 1 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, 5 engineering centers of Tianjin, 8 international joint research centers of Tianjin, 2 collaborative innovation centers of Tianjin, 6 key laboratories of China Light Industry, 5 provincial and ministerial humanities and social science research platforms such as the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of General Colleges and Universities in Tianjin, and the first carbon neutrality research institute of colleges and universities in Tianjin. The scientific research results have made new breakthroughs, and have won 7 national science and technology awards, 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award, 3 China Patent Excellence Awards, more than 180 provincial and ministerial and social science and technology awards, and 29 provincial and ministerial social science outstanding achievement awards. The number of scientific research projects has continued to rise, and the university has presided over 6 special projects of the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, the Excellent Young Scientist Fund, the National Natural Science Foundation Key Project, the National Social Science Fund Project, and the National Natural Science Foundation International (Regional) Cooperation Project. The ability to create, use, protect, manage and provide services for intellectual property rights has been continuously improved. In 2016, it was approved as a "National Patent Collaborative Application Pilot Unit", becoming one of the eight pilot universities in the country and the only university selected in Tianjin; in 2018, it was approved for the "Tianjin High-Value Patent Cultivation Project"; in 2020, it implemented the licensing of a patent technology package worth 10 million yuan to promote corporate technology upgrades and industry development; in 2020, it was approved as the "Second Batch of National Intellectual Property Information Service Centers for Colleges and Universities", becoming the first "national" intellectual property information service center in Tianjin universities, and was selected as one of the first batch of national intellectual property pilot university construction units; in 2021, it was approved to build the Tianjin Binhai New Area Intellectual Property Operation Service System-Comprehensive Industry Intellectual Property Operation Center Construction Project. In recent years, more than 100 patent transfer and implementation license contracts have been signed, including 3 contracts worth tens of millions of yuan, which effectively promoted the technological upgrading of enterprises and the development of the industry. We have continued to promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and have been approved as the first batch of technology transfer demonstration institutions in Tianjin. We have built a number of new industry-university-research cooperation institutions such as technology achievement transformation sub-centers, enterprise key laboratories, and school-enterprise collaborative innovation centers across the country. We have built R&D centers, modern industrial colleges, industrial technology research institutes and other industry-university-research cooperation platforms with a number of high-level scientific research institutions and large enterprises such as the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wanhua Chemical, a Fortune 500 company, Zhengwei International Group, ZTE, iFLYTEK, etc. We have also cooperated with the China Alcoholic Drinks Association to establish the China Alcoholic Drinks Association Industrial Innovation Technology Research Institute, promoting the integration of science and education, industry and education, and collaborative education, and continuously improving the fit between talent training and social needs. We continue to strengthen and promote the scientific and technological cooperation between the province and the university, and have established close scientific and technological cooperation relations with more than 20 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. We have signed a comprehensive scientific and technological cooperation strategic agreement with Tianjin Binhai New Area, Hexi, Jinnan, Dongli, Wuqing, Baodi, Jizhou and other districts and counties, and have facilitated horizontal scientific and technological connections with more than 300 enterprises in relevant districts and counties, and further strengthened our ability to serve industries and enterprises. In 2021, we will comprehensively promote the construction of the University Science and Technology Park, and be recognized as the first batch of Tianjin University Science and Technology Park. The school uses its disciplinary and talent advantages to introduce innovative resources into the science and technology park, forming a linkage system and mechanism of "campus, science and technology park, and urban community" to build an innovative ecological system for the coordinated and integrated development of universities and regions. The science and technology park plans to build functional carriers such as industrial technology research institutes, pilot bases, incubation bases and dual innovation bases, with a total of more than 40 companies settled in, and relying on the university science and technology park, it has applied for nearly 200 invention patents.

VI. Ideological and political education and daily training for college students

The school always adheres to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, attaches great importance to the ideological and political education of college students, implements the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, and establishes a mechanism for the ideological and political education of college students with the concept of "three-dimensional education and five-dimensional education". The ideological and political education of college students in the school has been reported by mainstream media such as CCTV News Network, People's Daily, China Education Daily, and Tianjin Daily. The school regards practice-based education as an important part of the "Ten Plus One" education system of the school's ideological and political work, and was approved as the first batch of Tianjin University Practice-Based Education Communities. It actively built a fixed-point and normalized school-to-local practice service system with the Binhai New Area Government; vigorously implemented the "Young Marxist Training Project", carried out brand activities such as "New Era · Practice Tour", "Summer Three Going to the Countryside", and "Love in Binhai", established 175 social practice bases, and more than 100 teams and nearly 6,000 people participated in the "Three Going to the Countryside" activities every year.
