Tianjin University of Commerce was formerly known as Tianjin Business College. It was founded in 1980 by the Ministry of Commerce and Tianjin Municipal People's Government. In 1998, the school implemented a management system of co-construction by the central and local governments and local management as the main management. In 2007, the school was renamed Tianjin University of Commerce.

The school is located at No. 409, Guangrong Road, Beichen District, Tianjin, covering an area of ​​nearly 1,340 acres, with a building area of ​​nearly 510,000 square meters, and a total value of 556 million yuan for teaching and scientific research equipment. The library currently has 2.2087 million Chinese and foreign books, 756 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals are subscribed annually, 56 Chinese and foreign databases, and 4.6373 million electronic books.

The school has more than 22,900 students, including the School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Economics, School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Biotechnology and Food Science, School of Law, School of Public Administration, School of Marxism, School of Foreign Languages, School of Science, School of Information Engineering, School of International Education Cooperation, School of Art, and School of Vocational and Continuing Education, and 3 teaching departments, including the University Foreign Language Teaching Department, Basic Course Teaching Department, and Physical Education Teaching Department. There are 59 undergraduate majors (directions), 11 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, and 12 professional master's degree categories. The school has the qualifications to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduates without examination, as well as the qualifications for recruiting postgraduates from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and the right to apply for master's degrees for people with equivalent academic qualifications.

The school insists on taking discipline construction as the leader, and the disciplines of economics, management, engineering, law, literature, science, and art are coordinated and mutually supported, with distinctive business characteristics. The disciplines of power engineering and engineering thermal physics were selected into the list of first-class disciplines in Tianjin, and the disciplines of cold chain logistics and modern service industry were selected into the list of characteristic disciplines in Tianjin. The school currently has 7 municipal key disciplines, 1 Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, 1 Tianjin Engineering Center, 2 Tianjin Key Laboratories, 2 International Joint Research Centers, 2 Tianjin Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Bases, 2 Tianjin University Think Tanks, and several school-level research institutes, institutes, and centers.

The major of finance is a national comprehensive reform pilot major, the major of food science and engineering is a pilot major for the reform of the national first batch of excellent agricultural and forestry talent education and training plan, and the major of energy and power engineering is a pilot major for comprehensive reform in Tianjin and a pilot major for "excellent engineer talent training" in Tianjin.

The school has established a national talent training model innovation experimental zone for "International Hotel Management", an excellent talent training base for China's tourism and hotel industry, and a national off-campus practical education base for college students, "Tianjin Commercial University-Yantai Binglun Co., Ltd. Engineering Practice Education Center". It has 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 10 Tianjin municipal experimental teaching demonstration centers (including construction units), 1 Tianjin municipal virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and 1 Tianjin A-level (excellent) college maker space. It has established close partnerships with more than 30 universities in the United States, Russia, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, South Korea, Romania, Poland and other countries, and carried out various forms of cooperation and exchanges. The university has cooperated with Florida International University, Charles Sturt University, and Eastern Michigan University in the United States to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education. The cooperative education project has successfully passed the evaluation of the Ministry of Education's Sino-foreign cooperative education project. The hotel management (Sino-US cooperation) major was rated as the first in the competitiveness ranking of Chinese hotel management major universities in 2014-2015 and 2017-2018 by the China Education Quality Evaluation Center and the China Science Evaluation Research Center of Wuhan University.
