Civil Aviation University of China is now affiliated to the Civil Aviation Administration of China. It is also a university jointly established by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Tianjin Municipal People's Government, and the Ministry of Education. The school serves the aviation transportation industry and aviation manufacturing industry, especially the "integration of the two industries". It is committed to cultivating high-quality, international, and complex senior engineering and management talents. It is a multidisciplinary university with disciplines such as engineering, management, science, economics, literature, law, and art. It is a "double first-class" construction university in Tianjin and a high-level characteristic university construction university.

The predecessor of the school was the Second Civil Aviation School of the Civil Aviation Administration of the Chinese People's Revolutionary Military Commission, which was established on September 25, 1951. It was renamed the Civil Aviation College of China in 1981 and the Civil Aviation University of China on May 30, 2006.

The development of the school has always received the cordial care and strong support of the main leaders of the Party and the country. Chairman Mao Zedong personally appointed General Fang Huai as the president of the school, and Premier Zhou Enlai personally selected the school site. In 2011, Zhang Dejiang, then member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, attended the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Civil Aviation University of China. In 2021, Liu He, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, sent a written speech to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Civil Aviation University of China.

Since its establishment, the school has adhered to the principle of moral education as the foundation of education, based on civil aviation, serving the society and facing the world. It has adhered to the original intention of "building civil aviation, developing civil aviation and strengthening civil aviation", the family and country feelings of "loyalty, patriotism and struggle", the school motto of "enlightenment and perfection, perseverance and prosperity", the school spirit of "strict and progressive", the teaching style of "respecting morality and strictness, establishing learning and establishing people", and the style of study of "diligent learning, profound knowledge, rigorous and innovative". It has made important contributions to the national economic and social development and is working tirelessly towards the goal of becoming a world-class civil aviation university with Chinese characteristics.

The school has two main campuses, Tianjin Dongli Campus and Ninghe Campus, as well as three flight training bases, Chaoyang Flight Academy, Inner Mongolia Flight Academy and Xinjiang Tianxiang Aviation Academy Co., Ltd. The school covers a total area of ​​1.694 million square meters and a total construction area of ​​874,000 square meters.

There is currently 1 first-level discipline doctoral authorization point (safety science and engineering), 11 first-level discipline master authorization points, 7 professional degree master authorization points, and 38 undergraduate majors. The discipline ecosystem of "top safety, first-class transportation, well-known aerospace, high-quality information, interdisciplinary science, and characteristic literature and management" is gradually taking shape. Safety science and engineering has been selected as Tianjin's first-class disciplines and Tianjin's top disciplines cultivation plan, and the aerospace and transportation discipline group has been selected as Tianjin's characteristic discipline (group) construction list. Engineering has entered the top 1% of ESI globally.

There are 4 national and 9 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites; 3 national characteristic majors; 3 national professional comprehensive reform pilot majors; 4 majors in the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program; 5 majors in Tianjin's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program; 9 Tianjin brand majors; 8 Tianjin's characteristic advantage major construction projects and 8 Tianjin's applied major construction projects; 2 majors of transportation and communication engineering have passed the engineering education certification; the electronic information engineering major is a pilot major for the reform of the CDIO engineering education model of the Ministry of Education; Sino-European aviation engineers have joined the Ministry of Education's Excellence Program; 3 majors, including electronic information engineering, aircraft power engineering, and aircraft manufacturing engineering, are the only undergraduate majors in China that have passed the certification of the International Aviation Certification Committee. All undergraduate majors have the qualification to recommend outstanding fresh graduates to study for postgraduates without examination. There are 4 national first-class undergraduate courses, 1 Ministry of Education boutique video open course, 38 Tianjin first-class undergraduate courses, and 1 "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" national planning textbook. There are 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers; 1 national virtual simulation experimental center; 1 national demonstration engineering professional degree graduate joint training base; 1 national engineering practice education center; 9 Tianjin municipal experimental teaching demonstration centers; 2 Tianjin municipal virtual simulation experimental centers; 1 Tianjin first batch of virtual teaching and research room pilot construction project. In the last two national teaching achievement awards for higher education, Civil Aviation University of China won 2 second prizes as the first completion unit.

The school has 15 colleges, as well as a graduate school, a flight branch, and a science and technology innovation research institute. There are more than 28,000 full-time students, including nearly 3,000 graduate students of various types and nearly 200 international students. The school currently has more than 2,100 faculty and staff. The school is now the first university in China to become a formal member of the International Aviation Certification Board (AA BI) and pass professional certification, and is also a member of the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS Programme. The school co-founded the Sino-European Aviation Engineering College with the French Aerospace University Group (GEA), systematically introduced the French engineering education model, and has been certified by the French Engineering Title Committee (CTI) for the longest period (6 years) twice in a row. It has been one of the chair units of Sino-foreign cooperative education institutions and was rated as an "Excellent Sino-French University Cooperation Project" by the Chinese and French governments in June 2016. The school has jointly carried out credit recognition and dual degree programs with institutions such as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the United States, Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, and Albi Mines University in France. The school continues to adapt to the "transition and advancement" development characteristics of civil aviation powers, deepens its internationalization strategy, introduces high-quality overseas resources through various means such as cooperative education, and continuously improves its internationalization capabilities and levels.

The school has rich practical teaching, with 75 flight teaching and training aircraft of various types, 22 aircraft maintenance practice aircraft, 3 D-level flight full-motion simulators, 208 other types of training simulators/devices, and 62 sets of various aircraft engines.

The school library currently has 2.38 million paper books, 3.17 million electronic books, and 106 databases. It has cooperated with world-renowned aviation manufacturing companies to build the COMAC, Airbus, Boeing, and Safran data rooms, and opened the COMAC Online, Boeing Online, and Airbus Online websites, which can directly access relevant technical information.

The quality of the school's students has always been at the forefront of universities nationwide, and the quality of undergraduate enrollment is close to the top 5% of universities nationwide. The Civil Aviation Administration of China has approved the "four types" of scientific research institutes and "three major" bases. Promote the construction and approval of the Civil Aviation Science and Technology Innovation (Daxing) Base Project. Help Tianjin Binhai New Area successfully obtain the first batch of national civil unmanned aerial test areas. As the main initiator, the Tianjin Aerospace Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance was established. 3 subject groups were included in the first batch of Tianjin University Service Industry Characteristic Subject Groups.

In recent years, the university has accelerated the transformation and development of scientific research and innovation, with the mission of supporting the scientific and technological innovation that forms the international "ABC" pattern in the aviation field. Focusing on the strategic needs of civil aviation development and the forefront of civil aviation science and technology development, and solving the "bottleneck" problems of the national "civil aviation power strategy", the university has focused on deepening the creation of the "five verticals, one horizontal and one park" science and technology development strategy theme. Five major research institutes have been established in the business fields of civil aircraft safety and airworthiness, airspace safety operation, future airports and intelligent equipment, general aviation and drone transportation systems, civil aviation environment and sustainable development. With aviation safety as the main body, the university has focused on creating a "top safety" discipline peak. The School of Safety Science and Engineering has been established successively, and a number of provincial and ministerial key laboratories and technology innovation centers in the field of aviation safety, such as the Civil Aviation Aircraft Airworthiness Certification Technology Key Laboratory, the Civil Aviation Thermal Disaster Prevention and Emergency Key Laboratory, and the Tianjin Aviation Equipment Safety and Airworthiness Technology Innovation Center, are actively impacting the National Key Laboratory of Civil Aviation Safety and the National Technology Innovation Center for Aircraft Safety and Airworthiness. Actively integrate into the Civil Aviation Science, Education and Innovation Alliance and the Tianjin Aerospace Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance, and strive to build a civil aviation science, education and innovation consortium; strengthen industry-university-research cooperation with the aviation manufacturing industry, break through the core technology of industry development, form technical standards in key areas of civil aviation, and strive to build a national university science and technology park on the basis of being approved as the first batch of university science and technology parks in Tianjin.

After more than 70 years of pioneering and enterprising, the school has become the highest institution, main base and main force for professional and technical talent training and scientific and technological innovation in China's civil aviation.
