Shanghai University is a comprehensive university under the jurisdiction of Shanghai and a key construction project of the national "211 Project". It is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, one of the first batch of high-level local universities in Shanghai, and a national first-class discipline construction university. Founded on October 23, 1922, Shanghai University is the first regular university founded by the Communist Party of China. The school overcame various difficulties and ran the school with difficulty, attracting enthusiastic young people from all over the world to gather, gathering and cultivating a large number of outstanding talents for China's revolution and construction, and won the reputation of "Shanghai University for literature and Huangpu for martial arts" and "Beijing University in the May Fourth Movement in the north and Shanghai University in the May Thirtieth Movement in the south". Sun Yat-sen, Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Mao Zedong and others cared about the construction of the school, either serving as school directors, or appointing talents, or guiding the work.

Yu Youren, Qu Qiubai, Deng Zhongxia, Shao Lizi, Chen Wangdao and others led the development of the school, recruited talents, planned disciplines, or took charge of teaching affairs. The "red professors" represented by Qu Qiubai, Deng Zhongxia, Cai Hesen, Zhang Tailei, Yun Daiying, Ren Bishi, Shi Cuntong, Xiao Chu'nu, Shen Yanbing, Tian Han, Jiang Guangci and others actively spread Marxism-Leninism, making Shanghai University the "highest revolutionary institution in the southeast" that revolutionary youth yearned for.

In the 1920s, Shanghai University implemented the school's mission of "cultivating talents for nation-building and promoting cultural undertakings", and achieved remarkable results and was full of talents. Yang Shangkun, Wang Jiaxiang, Qin Bangxian, Guan Xiangying, Li Shuoxun, Wang Buwen, Liu Hua, He Bingyi, Yang Hansheng, Ding Ling, Dai Wangshu, Kuang Yaming, Yang Zhihua, Zhang Qinqiu, Zhong Fuguang, Shi Zhecun, Wang Yizhi and others all came from here. Among them are leaders of the Party and the country, martyrs who died for the country, famous social activists, first-class scholars, writers, playwrights, poets, etc. They have made outstanding contributions in the dissemination of Marxist theory, social science research, and popularization of natural sciences. In May 1983, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government decided to merge six schools, including Fudan University Branch, Shanghai International Studies University Branch, East China Normal University Instrument and Electronic Branch, Shanghai University of Science and Technology Branch, Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering Light Industry Branch, and Shanghai Fine Arts School, to reopen Shanghai University (referred to as the former Shanghai University).

In May 1994, the new Shanghai University was established by merging Shanghai University of Technology (founded in 1960), Shanghai University of Science and Technology (founded in 1958), the former Shanghai University (founded in 1983) and Shanghai Institute of Technology (founded in 1959). The teachers and students of Shanghai University are determined to inherit and carry forward the glorious tradition of Shanghai University in the 1920s and make greater contributions to the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Professor Qian Weichang, a famous scientist, educator, outstanding social activist and senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became the president of Shanghai University of Technology in 1983 and the president of Shanghai University from 1994 to 2010. His unique educational ideas and school management strategies have created a new situation of ideological liberation and academic prosperity for the school and promoted the new development of various undertakings of the school.

It has 1 national key laboratory co-built by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 international science and technology cooperation base, 1 national key laboratory cultivation base co-built by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 1 innovative talent training demonstration base; 1 national engineering laboratory (co-built) and 1 national engineering research center southern experimental base (co-built) of the National Development and Reform Commission; 3 key laboratories, 2 engineering research centers, 1 international joint laboratory, 1 scientific and technological achievement transformation and technology transfer base and 1 approved country and regional research center of the Ministry of Education. 1 research base co-built by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, 1 key sports social science research base of the State General Administration of Sports, 1 policy theory research base of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, 1 language and writing promotion base of the National Language Commission, 1 cultural relics research center of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, and 1 International Drug Control Policy Center of the Office of the National Narcotics Control Commission, etc. 67 base platforms at the provincial and ministerial level and above. The school currently has 18,021 graduate students, 19,921 full-time undergraduates (including 63 preparatory students), and 19,912 adult education students. Shanghai University is an important talent training base in Shanghai.

The school is one of the 17 universities with national pilot colleges, one of the first batch of universities to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" by the Ministry of Education, and one of the universities to implement the "Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Education and Training Program 2.0" by the Ministry of Education and the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. Qian Weichang College was selected as one of the first batch of "Three-dimensional Education" comprehensive reform pilot colleges (departments) of the Ministry of Education.

The school has established a distinctive talent training model with the credit system, elective system, and short semester system as the core. As of August 31, 2021, our school has a total of 9,322 graduates in 2021 (including 608 targeted employment graduate students), and the initial graduation destination implementation rate is 94.05%. Shanghai University actively implements the strategy of strengthening the school with talents, and has initially formed a faculty team with clearer levels, more reasonable structure, internationalization, and adaptability to the needs of school development. It has also formed a number of distinctive, influential, and potential discipline teams in most disciplines. There are 3,419 full-time teachers, including 774 professors, 1,061 associate professors, and 2,562 teachers with doctoral degrees. Shanghai University's scientific research capabilities and levels are among the best in the country. The number of academic papers included in the three major international retrievals (SCI, EI, and CPCI-S) ranks 46th, 43rd, and 31st among universities in the country, respectively. In 2021, 7 people were selected as "Global Highly Cited Scientists". In 2020, 167 National Natural Science Foundation projects were obtained; 51 National Social Science Fund projects (including 5 major projects), 14 humanities and social science research projects of the Ministry of Education, and 32 Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Planning Projects were obtained. Shanghai University actively promotes open cooperation, carries out extensive international exchanges and cooperation, and Sino-foreign cooperative education has developed steadily. At present, the school has signed inter-school cooperation agreements with 242 universities or institutions in 53 countries and regions.

There are 2,603 ​​foreign students studying in the school, from 149 countries and regions around the world, including 2,268 degree students; 64 degree students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 8 exchange students. The school was rated as a demonstration base unit for studying in China by the Ministry of Education and the first batch of high-level international talent training innovation and practice bases. Based on the construction of a smart campus, the school has completed the ring optical cable interconnection of the four campuses, promoted the construction of a campus-based Internet of Things, the integration of four centers and 5G campus, created a one-stop service center, and realized a number of business process optimization and reconstruction.

The school is carrying out data governance, data sharing, one-stop service and one-network management, gradually promoting the construction of AI+ education artificial intelligence application scenarios, and implementing the discipline intelligent computing service sharing platform in steps, providing a relatively complete first-class information service system for education and teaching, scientific research, efficient management, and teacher-student services, and further accelerating the digital transformation of education.

Shanghai University has always attached great importance to party building and spiritual civilization construction. Since 1994, Shanghai University has been rated as a Shanghai Civilized Unit 11 times; in 2009, it was rated as a "National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction"; in 2011 and 2015, it was rated as a "National Civilized Unit" twice; in November 2017, it was awarded the first "National Civilized Campus" title; in April 2019, it was awarded the first "Shanghai Civilized Campus" title; in November 2020, with the approval of the Central Spiritual Civilization Construction Steering Committee, Shanghai University's National Civilized Campus re-examination passed, and continued to retain the honorary title of National Civilized Campus; in April 2021, it was awarded the second "Shanghai Civilized Campus" title; in November 2018, Shanghai University's "Chinese Ancient Poetry Recitation and Creation Base" was selected as the first batch of China's Excellent Traditional Culture Inheritance Bases by the Ministry of Education; in October 2019, Suyuan (Shanghai University Museum) was approved as a Shanghai Patriotism Education Base.
