Shanghai Second Polytechnic University is a Shanghai-affiliated general higher education institution that excels in engineering and has coordinated development of multiple disciplines including management, economics, liberal arts, science and art. It focuses on undergraduate education and also has the right to confer master's degrees. It is a construction (cultivation) unit of Shanghai's doctoral degree authorization unit.

Shanghai Second Polytechnic University is a new type of university that has been growing along with the socialist construction of New China. The school was formerly the Shanghai Amateur Industrial University established in 1960 and renamed Shanghai Second Polytechnic University in 1984. It is currently the only university in Shanghai named "Industrial University". In the course of more than 60 years of schooling, the school has gone through adult education, full-time undergraduate education and postgraduate education. It has always adhered to the orientation of cultivating applied technical talents, facing social needs and serving national strategies. It has provided nearly 200,000 technical and applied talents of all levels and types for Shanghai and the whole country, and cultivated more than 130 national and provincial and ministerial model workers. The school has obvious location advantages and strong faculty. The Jinhai Road Campus is located in Jinqiao, Pudong, Shanghai, close to the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and many Fortune 500 companies. It covers an area of ​​nearly 800 acres and has a school building area of ​​nearly 400,000 square meters. The university has 16 secondary colleges (departments) and more than 13,000 full-time students. It has a faculty with high comprehensive quality, strong scientific research ability and rich teaching experience. There are 820 full-time teachers, nearly 40% of whom have doctoral degrees. There are 43 talents of various levels and types, including the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, Oriental Scholars Distinguished Professors, and Shuguang Scholars.

The school adheres to the principle of cultivating people with morality and cultivating connotation. The school is a cultivation unit of Shanghai's "High-level Local University Construction" and a postdoctoral innovation and practice base in Pudong New Area. Talent training covers 6 disciplines and 24 professional categories, including engineering, management, economics, literature, science, and art. There are 6 master's degree programs, 45 undergraduate majors, and 20 higher vocational majors. The discipline of "Environmental Science and Engineering (Resource Cycle Science and Engineering)" was approved for the construction of Class II plateau disciplines in Shanghai universities. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the school, in combination with the construction goals of high-level local universities, arranged the construction of two plateau disciplines, "Mechanical Engineering (Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering)" and "Materials Science and Engineering (Energy Saving and New Energy Materials)" according to the plan. It has more than 30 national specialty majors, 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Training Program, the Ministry of Education's "Undergraduate Teaching Project" local colleges and universities' first batch of undergraduate majors comprehensive reform pilot, Shanghai's applied undergraduate pilot majors, Shanghai's first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and Shanghai's undergraduate education highland construction projects. It has more than 30 national first-class undergraduate courses, national quality courses, and Shanghai quality courses. The school has always been connected to social needs and improved its service level. It has undertaken more than 100 national projects such as the National "863" Project, the National Natural Science Foundation Major Project, the National Key R&D Program Project, the National Natural Science Foundation Project, and the National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation Project. It has provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as "Shanghai Advanced Thermal Functional Materials Engineering Technology Research Center", "Shanghai Electronic Waste Resource Collaborative Innovation Center", "Shanghai Reverse Logistics and Supply Chain Collaborative Innovation Center (cultivation)", "Shanghai Model Worker Culture Research Center", and "Shanghai Vocational and Technical Teacher Education Research Institute". It jointly built the "Shanghai Engineering Materials Application and Evaluation Key Laboratory" with the Shanghai Institute of Materials, and cooperated with the National Radio Monitoring Center Testing Center to build the "Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Key Laboratory Shanghai Second Polytechnic University Branch Laboratory". The school focuses on the integration of industry and education, and has carried out comprehensive cooperation with famous companies and research institutes such as Jiangnan Shipbuilding, Commercial Aircraft, Huahong, Aerospace Eighth Institute, Shanghai Electric, Bank of China Shanghai Branch, Shanghai Institute of Computing Technology, and Disney. Relying on the National University Science and Technology Park of the Second Polytechnic University and dozens of technology transfer workstations in the Yangtze River Delta region, it carries out scientific and technological achievements transformation and industrial incubation, and the "Intelligent Manufacturing" Industrial Technology Research Institute jointly built with Wuyi County, Zhejiang Province has been successfully landed and officially operated.

Improve quality and efficiency, and continuously improve the level of school education openness to the outside world. At present, it has established stable cooperative relations with more than 150 universities and institutions in 36 countries and regions. There are 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education institution and 2 Sino-foreign cooperative education projects. Nearly 140 multi-level joint training projects for undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees have been carried out. There are 110 academic students from 24 countries. At present, there are 5 all-English majors, 9 Shanghai colleges and universities' demonstration all-English courses, 9 Shanghai colleges and universities' English-taught demonstration courses for foreign students, a total of 86 undergraduate all-English courses and 24 all-English projects. The school has 14 international joint laboratories and joint research centers, and has jointly applied for 8 EU Erasmus+ projects with overseas countries.
