East China University of Science and Technology Shanghai Institute of Technology, referred to as "Shanghai University of Science and Technology", is located in Shanghai. It is a national key research university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China with science and engineering characteristics, covering 11 disciplines including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, art, philosophy, and education; it is one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" world-class discipline construction universities in the country, one of the first batch of "211 Project" and "985 Platform" key construction universities in the country, a member of the High-level Industry Characteristic University Quality Resource Sharing Alliance, selected for the National Construction of High-level University Public Graduate Program, 111 Project, Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, 2011 Project, National New Engineering Research and Practice Project, National Undergraduate Innovative Experimental Program, National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform, and Chinese Government Scholarship Receiving University for International Students in China; one of the first batch of schools in the country to recruit graduate students in 1956, one of the first batch of doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree awarding institutions in the country, one of the first 22 universities in the country to implement independent enrollment reform, and one of the first six innovative and comprehensive research universities with national technology transfer centers.

East China University of Science and Technology, formerly known as East China Institute of Chemical Engineering, was established in 1952 by merging the chemical engineering departments of Jiaotong University (Shanghai), Aurora University (Shanghai), Datong University (Shanghai), Soochow University (Suzhou), and Jiangnan University (Wuxi). It is the first higher education institution in New China known for its chemical engineering characteristics and is known as the "cradle of chemical engineers" in my country. In 1956, it was designated as one of the first schools in the country to recruit graduate students. In 1960, it was designated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1993, it was approved by the State Education Commission and renamed East China University of Science and Technology. In 1996, it entered the ranks of the national "211 Project" key construction. In 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a graduate school. In 2008, it was approved to build the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform". In 2017, it was selected as a national "Double First-Class" construction university, and three disciplines of chemistry, materials science and engineering, and chemical engineering and technology were selected in the list of first-class disciplines.

The school currently has three campuses in Xuhui, Fengxian and Jinshan, covering a total area of ​​2,532 acres, with a total building area of ​​950,000 square meters and a total library collection of 3.51 million books. It has established national metrology certification units such as the Analysis and Testing Center and the Jewelry Testing Center. The school has won the honorary title of "Civilized Unit (Campus)" in Shanghai for 13 consecutive times.

The school has 17 professional colleges, and the subject settings cover 11 disciplines including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, art, philosophy, and education. There are 74 undergraduate majors (including 9 Sino-foreign cooperative majors and 1 second bachelor's degree major); 31 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 17 master's professional degree authorization points; 18 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 4 doctoral professional degree authorization points; 14 postdoctoral research mobile stations. It has 8 national key disciplines, 10 Shanghai key disciplines, and 7 first-class disciplines in Shanghai universities. It has 12 national specialty majors, 26 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 3 Shanghai first-class undergraduate major construction sites. "Chemical Engineering and Technology" is the first major in mainland China to pass the ABET certification, and "Chemistry" is the first major in mainland China to pass the Sino-Russian joint international science major certification. All majors of the business school have passed the business education certification of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The school's 12 majors, including chemical engineering and technology, information engineering, and food science and engineering, have passed the engineering education professional certification. Eight disciplines, including chemistry, materials science, engineering, biology and biochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, agricultural science, computer science, and environmental science and ecology, have entered the top 1% of ESI worldwide, and the chemistry discipline has entered the top 1‰ worldwide.

The school adheres to the socialist direction of running schools, fully implements the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, and cultivates socialist builders and successors with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. There are more than 28,000 full-time students on campus, including 16,760 undergraduates, 9,521 master's students, 1,986 doctoral students, and 402 degree-seeking international students. It has 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 4 Shanghai experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 5 national engineering practice education centers. It has been selected as a typical university with graduate employment experience, a national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and a national demonstration base for cultivating innovative talents. In the QS global graduate employment competitiveness ranking, it ranks 16th among mainland universities. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 380,000 graduates for the country, all over the world. Among the alumni, 29 were elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 10 were elected as overseas academicians. A large number of graduates have become the backbone and backbone of party and government agencies, enterprises and institutions.

It has 2 national key laboratories, 4 national engineering (technology) research centers, 1 frontier science center of the Ministry of Education, 1 basic science center of the National Natural Science Foundation, 39 provincial and ministerial key scientific research bases, and 5 provincial and ministerial humanities and social science think tanks (bases). It has a national university science and technology park and is one of the first six universities in the country to establish a national technology transfer center. It has been selected as a national intellectual property information service center for universities, a university science and technology achievement transformation and technology transfer base, a national intellectual property demonstration university, and a pilot unit for the construction of a first-batch professional national technology transfer institution. It has achieved a large number of major innovative achievements, won 71 national science and technology awards, more than 700 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, and has more than 2,000 valid domestic and foreign patents. The large-scale industrialization and promotion and application of a number of industry common and key technologies have produced significant economic and social benefits.

The school benchmarks the world's first-class, faces social needs, and has built an all-round, wide-ranging, and multi-level opening and exchange situation. It has established long-term cooperative relations with more than 130 foreign universities and scientific research institutions including Oxford University. It has been approved as the first batch of high-level international talent training innovation and practice bases by the Ministry of Education. It has been approved as 9 "111 Plan" discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Feringa Nobel Prize Scientist Joint Research Center and the Oliver Hart Contract and Governance Research Center have been established. The school has a Sino-French cooperative school-International School of Engineering Excellence, the world's first Confucius Institute for Science and Technology Innovation in the UK, and the first Sino-Romanian co-constructed "East China University of Science and Technology Sibiu CEIBS International Business School" in Romania.
