Fudan University

The name of Fudan University comes from the "Sun and Moon Brilliance, Day by Day Fudan" in "Shangshu Dachuan". It was founded in 1905 and was originally named Fudan Public School. In 1917, it was named Fudan University. It is the first higher education institution independently founded by Chinese. The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University Medical School founded in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University. At present, the school has 11 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. In 2017, the school was selected into the list of "Double First-Class" universities and established 27 "Double First-Class" disciplines. It is a world-renowned and top comprehensive research university in China.

At present, Fudan University has 35 directly affiliated colleges (departments) and 18 affiliated hospitals (4 of which are under construction). The school has 79 undergraduate majors, 37 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 43 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points (including first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points), 4 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 32 master's professional degree authorization points, and 35 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 13,991 ordinary undergraduate and junior college students, 22,232 graduate students (including full-time and part-time students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), and 2,946 academic students. There are 3,139 teaching and research personnel in the school. There are 51 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including dual appointments), 1 outstanding professor of liberal arts, 13 senior professors of liberal arts, 118 people in the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, and 301 people selected for various important national youth talent programs.

In the QS World University Rankings, Fudan University ranks 40th in the world and 3rd in domestic universities. In terms of academic influence, Fudan University has 19 disciplines in the top 1% of the world in ESI, ranking second (tied) among universities in mainland China. Among them, chemistry, materials science, clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology are in the top 1‰ in the world. In the QS World Subject Rankings, Fudan has 29 disciplines ranked in the top 100 in the world, ranking third in China in total; five major disciplines are all ranked in the top 100 in the world, and only two universities in mainland China are among them. In the U.S. News World Subject Rankings, 4 disciplines are among the top 50 in the world, and in the THE Times Higher Education World Subject Rankings, 1 major discipline category is among the top 50 in the world. In the fourth round of national first-level discipline evaluation, 5 disciplines were rated A+, and more than 60% of the participating disciplines were rated A-level disciplines. In addition, 14 disciplines were selected for Shanghai's peak discipline construction.

The school has 5 national key laboratories, 1 national mathematics center, 1 national key research base for textbook construction, 2 national clinical medicine research centers, 1 national manufacturing innovation center, 7 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 14 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 9 key laboratories of the National Health Commission, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Health of the General Logistics Department, 15 key laboratories of Shanghai, and 11 engineering research centers of Shanghai; there are 10 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, the China Institute was selected as the first batch of national high-end think tank construction pilot units, the School of Marxism was selected as the first batch of national key Marxist colleges, and the secretariat of the "China University Think Tank Forum" was settled in Fudan.

In recent years, Fudan University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 270 universities and institutions in more than 40 countries and regions around the world. About 8,000 teachers and students go abroad each year, receive about 5,000 overseas visitors each year, and hold about 100 international conferences each year.
