The history of the school can be traced back to the establishment of a technical school approved by the Qing government in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty. After the inheritance and development of Hubei Secondary Industrial School and Central South Iron and Steel Industrial School, it was established as Wuhan Iron and Steel College in 1958 and started undergraduate education. In 1995, Wuhan Iron and Steel College, Wuhan Architecture College, and Wuhan Metallurgical Medical College, which were affiliated to the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, merged to form Wuhan University of Metallurgical Science and Technology. In 1998, according to the needs of the national higher education management system reform, it became the first batch of transferred institutions to implement "central and local co-construction, mainly managed by the Hubei Provincial People's Government". In 1999, it was renamed Wuhan University of Science and Technology. Over the past 100 years, the school has trained more than 200,000 specialized talents of various types for the country and society. A large number of outstanding alumni have grown into academicians, experts and scholars, party and government leaders, and heads of large steel enterprises. The school is known as the "cradle of high-level metallurgical talents."

The university currently has three campuses: Qingshan, Huangjia Lake and Hongshan. The total campus area is 1.7143 million square meters, and the building area of ​​the school is 1.29 million square meters. Fixed assets are 3.101 billion yuan; the total value of teaching instruments and equipment is 694 million yuan; the library has a collection of 2.7805 million paper books and 1.006 million electronic books. There are more than 24,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 8,200 doctoral and master's students. The campus is surrounded by lakes and rivers, with beautiful scenery, complete teaching facilities and perfect school conditions. The school has a complete range of disciplines and distinctive characteristics. It has built a comprehensive university discipline system with engineering as the main focus, combining science and engineering, and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, medicine, literature, economics, law, philosophy, art, and education. There are 20 teaching colleges and 78 undergraduate majors; 8 postdoctoral research stations, 8 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 39 second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 33 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 176 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 20 master's professional degree categories. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, 11 disciplines ranked first among Hubei provincial universities; 3 disciplines including materials science and engineering, metallurgy and mining engineering, and mechanical engineering were selected as "domestic first-class disciplines" construction disciplines in Hubei Province; 4 disciplines including materials science, engineering, chemistry, and clinical medicine entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings.

The school insists on deepening the reform of education and teaching, and has been approved for 33 first-class undergraduate major construction sites of the "Double 10,000 Plan" (22 at the national level), 14 national specialty majors, "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and other national professional construction projects, 15 national first-class undergraduate courses, quality courses, bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 14 national planning textbooks, 7 practical teaching platforms such as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and the Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center; approved 3 national new engineering research and practice projects, 1 national new liberal arts research and reform practice project, and 4 national teaching achievement awards (1 first prize). It has established academic exchanges and cooperation with nearly 100 universities and research institutes in dozens of countries and regions such as the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Japan, Italy, and the Netherlands, and has carried out exchanges and cooperation in many aspects such as student exchanges, teacher visits, and joint scientific research. It has jointly built joint laboratories and research centers with the Technical University of Freiberg in Germany, the University of Leoben in Austria, and the Amsterdam Big Data Center in the Netherlands. It has cooperated with the University of Bridgeport in the United States, Deakin University in Australia, and Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom to organize undergraduate education programs, and cooperated with the Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands to organize master's education programs. Nearly 500 foreign students are enrolled in undergraduate majors such as clinical medicine, civil engineering, international economics and trade, and mechanical engineering, as well as first-level disciplines such as materials science and engineering, control science and engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and technology, safety science and engineering, mining engineering, and systems science and engineering.
