Hubei University of Engineering is a full-time undergraduate college run by the People's Government of Hubei Province. It is located in Xiaogan, the sub-central city of Wuhan City Circle and a famous city of Chinese filial piety culture. It is 50 kilometers away from downtown Wuhan. It takes 18 minutes to Wuhan Tianhe International Airport and 28 minutes to Hankou by Xiaohan Metro. It has convenient transportation and obvious location advantages. The history of the school can be traced back to the Hubei Provincial Third Normal School founded in 1943. It has gone through the development stages of Xiaogan Normal School, Xiaogan University, Xiaogan Branch of Wuhan Normal College, Xiaogan Normal College, and Xiaogan Normal College. In 1986, it merged with Hubei Vocational and Technical Normal College (formerly the Xiaogan Branch of Huazhong Agricultural College). In 1999, the Ministry of Construction's Southern Urban and Rural Construction School (also known as Xiaogan City Construction Engineering School) was fully incorporated. In March 2000, it was renamed Xiaogan College, and in December 2011, it was renamed Hubei Engineering College.

The school campus covers an area of ​​1,748 acres, with a construction area of ​​727,000 square meters, teaching and scientific research equipment worth 222 million yuan, and a collection of 2.85 million books. There are 18 teaching colleges and 1 independent college, with more than 20,000 students of various types (including 54 joint training graduate students). The school is a key university in the national "13th Five-Year Plan" industry-education integration development project (applied undergraduate colleges), a pilot college of the "Internet + Made in China 2025" industry-education integration promotion plan, and the first batch of Hubei Province 2011 Plan universities. It has won the "National Civilized Unit", Hubei Province's "Best Civilized Unit", the first batch of "Hubei Province Ecological Garden School", and the first "Hubei Province Civilized Campus". Ranked 386th in the 2021 Soft Science China University Rankings.

The school currently has more than 1,300 faculty and staff on the job, including 915 full-time teachers, including 789 master's degree and above, and 468 senior titles; 13 provincial and ministerial innovation teams, 3 teaching teams, various government subsidy recipients, Chutian Scholars, Hubei Famous Teachers, and 23 Sangchuan Scholars, 26 national and provincial honorary experts; more than 100 famous experts and scholars are employed as part-time (visiting, honorary) professors. "Chinese Filial Piety Culture Research" of "Journal of Hubei University of Engineering" is a famous column of the Ministry of Education.

The school continues to improve its discipline and professional system, adheres to the priority development of engineering, creates comparative advantages in agronomy and science, and realizes the cross-integration and coordinated development of 10 disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art. It has established 5 provincial key disciplines including agricultural resources and environment, materials science and engineering, optical engineering, education, and botany. The advantageous and characteristic discipline groups of "biomass-based functional materials" and "development and efficient utilization of characteristic agricultural resources" were approved as the advantageous and characteristic disciplines (groups) of Hubei Province's higher education institutions in the "14th Five-Year Plan". There are 12 disciplines in the Hubei Chutian Scholars Program. There are 64 undergraduate majors, including 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 3 national higher education specialty majors, 2 "National Excellent Talent Training Program" majors, 4 provincial undergraduate brand majors, 6 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 6 provincial strategic emerging (pillar) industry talent training plan majors, and 6 "Jingchu Excellent Talents" collaborative education majors. 1 major was selected as a national first-class major, there are 19 provincial first-class majors, 3 national first-class undergraduate courses, and 28 provincial first-class courses.

The school's applied talent training model reform has been deepened, and the quality of talent training has been continuously improved. Won 4 first prizes for teaching achievements in higher education institutions in Hubei Province. There are 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 provincial key experimental teaching demonstration center, and 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers (laboratories). There are more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial quality courses. In the past five years, our school has won 359 provincial and above college student innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects, including 89 national projects; students have won 679 awards in national discipline (science and technology) competitions, including the highest national awards in major competitions such as national college student electronic design, mathematical modeling, information technology innovation and practice, advertising art, smart cars, data mining, and college English; the student postgraduate entrance examination pass rate is nearly 20%; the graduate employment rate remains above 92%. Over the past 78 years, the university has trained a large number of senior professionals with solid professional foundation, strong practical application ability, good comprehensive quality, innovative spirit and social adaptability, and has been well received by employers and the society.

The school has promoted scientific and technological innovation and social services in a coordinated manner and achieved fruitful results. There are currently 1 Hubei Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center, 1 Hubei New Rural Development Research Institute, 3 Hubei Provincial Key Laboratories, 2 Hubei Engineering Technology Research Centers, 3 Hubei Provincial Key Research Bases for Humanities and Social Sciences, 2 Hubei School-Enterprise Jointly Built R&D Centers, 1 Hubei Graduate Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talent Internship Base, 2 Hubei Graduate Workstations, and 4 other Hubei Provincial Innovation Bases. In the past five years, the university has won 27 National Natural Science Foundation and Social Science Foundation, 116 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, 32 provincial and municipal scientific research achievement awards, and more than 600 authorized patents and software copyrights. The school vigorously implements the local service action plan, carries out school-local cooperation and construction with local governments such as Xiaogan City, and actively promotes industrial transformation and upgrading. In the process of serving the local area, we have gradually built and formed the Chinese Filial Piety Culture Research Institute, Hubei Small and Micro Enterprise Development Research Center, Hubei Biomass Source Functional Materials Engineering Technology Center, Hubei New Rural Development Research Institute, Hubei Key Laboratory of Quality and Safety Control of Special Fruits and Vegetables, Xiaogan Branch of Hubei High-resolution Center, Yudian College, Xiaogan Local Legislation Research Center, Xiaogan City Global Tourism Research Center, Xiaogan Entrepreneurship University, Xiaogan Sunshine Social Work Service Center, Hanchuan Garment Industry Research Institute, "Beautiful Countryside" Planning and Construction Team and other special service brands.

The school has promoted the opening of schools in all directions, and the cooperative education has achieved remarkable results. We have strengthened school-to-school cooperation, established a joint postgraduate training base with Wuhan University, Central China Normal University, Hubei University, and Three Gorges University, and jointly trained professional master's students with Hubei University and Three Gorges University. We have deepened the integration of production and education, school-enterprise cooperation, carried out talent training and industry-university-research cooperation with a large number of large enterprises, and built 260 internship and training and employment and entrepreneurship bases, and built 5 national and provincial off-campus practical teaching (internship and training) bases. Strengthen international cooperation and exchanges, establish inter-school exchange and cooperation relations with more than 10 universities in the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries, recruit international students from more than 10 countries, and jointly organize undergraduate international cooperative education programs in financial engineering and civil engineering approved by the Ministry of Education with the University of Wolverhampton and Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, which passed the project evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2019 and 2017 respectively. International exchange activities such as teacher training and study abroad and student study abroad are increasing.
