Jianghan University is a comprehensive university located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, a city that connects nine provinces. The school implements a system of co-construction by the province and the city, with the city as the main body. In October 2001, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the new Jianghan University was established on the basis of the merger of the original Jianghan University, the Hankou Branch of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Education College, and Wuhan Workers Medical College. In June 2002, the school moved as a whole to Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone.

In 2018, the school was selected as a "domestic first-class discipline construction university" in the "Double First-Class" construction of Hubei Province, and the chemical engineering and technology discipline was selected as a "domestic first-class discipline construction discipline" in Hubei Province.
