South-Central University for Nationalities

South-Central University for Nationalities is a comprehensive general university directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Hubei Province, and Wuhan City. It is located on the shore of Wuhan South Lake, the hometown of white clouds and yellow cranes. The school was founded in 1951 and is one of the earliest ethnic universities established after the founding of New China. Since its establishment, the school has always adhered to the socialist direction of running schools, implemented the party's education policy and ethnic policies, and has taken the forging of a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation as the main line and the establishment of morality and education as the fundamental task. All undertakings have achieved rapid development.

The school covers an area of ​​more than 1,550 acres and the school building area is more than 1 million square meters. The campus is shaded by trees and fragrant with flowers all year round. Modern buildings with strong ethnic characteristics are lined up one after another. The lake and mountain scenery complement the cultural landscape, forming a beautiful environment for teaching, scientific research and life.

The foundation of running the school has been steadily consolidated. The school currently has more than 29,000 full-time doctoral, master's, undergraduate, preparatory and other students from 56 nationalities. The school currently has 4 first-level doctoral programs, 25 academic first-level master's programs, and 20 professional master's programs. There are 82 undergraduate majors, covering 10 major disciplines, and 34 first-class undergraduate major construction sites (14 at the national level) have been approved. The environmental engineering major has passed the engineering education professional certification, and has obtained 4 national "new engineering" projects, 5 "new agricultural" projects, and 4 "new liberal arts" projects. It has been approved for 9 national first-class undergraduate courses and 2 curriculum ideological and political demonstration projects of the Ministry of Education. In January 2018, the school was selected as one of the "domestic first-class universities under construction" in Hubei Province, and three disciplines, namely ethnology, chemistry and pharmacy, were selected as "domestic first-class disciplines under construction". In 2017, ethnology was rated as a Class A discipline in the subject evaluation of the Ministry of Education; three disciplines, namely chemistry, engineering and materials science, entered the top 1% of ESI disciplines in the world. There are more than 2,200 faculty members, including more than 1,400 full-time teachers of various types, and 58% of full-time teachers have doctoral degrees. It has a "Huang Danian-style teaching team" and has introduced and trained a number of high-level talents such as the national "outstanding young talents", the national "excellent young talents" and the leading talents of the national "Ten Thousand Talents Program". During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the university received 291 national scientific research projects, including 36 major key projects; published 761 CSSCI journal papers, including 131 papers in authoritative journals such as "Chinese Social Sciences"; published 1,373 SCI journal papers, including 279 papers in the first zone; published 245 high-level academic monographs, obtained 271 authorized invention patents, and won 123 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards; formulated 1 international standard for Chinese medicinal materials, Artemisia argyi; Hubei Institute for Comprehensive Well-off Construction was selected as China's core think tank in 2017, and built a "national science and technology enterprise incubator" and a national demonstration base for "Internet + Chinese civilization". The school ranked 86th in the number of C journal papers published by universities nationwide in 2019, and ranked 124th in the Nature Index in 2020. The humanities and social sciences editions and the natural science editions of the journal were all selected as "RCCSE China Core Academic Journals" A-level.

The school's influence continues to expand. In 2012, the school was approved as a national teacher teaching development demonstration center, the only approved unit among non-"985" and "211" universities; in 2001, 2006 and 2016, it achieved excellent results in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education for three consecutive years. In August 2017, it was named "National Demonstration University for Deepening Reform of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education". In September 2017, the school's talent training results were selected for the large-scale achievement exhibition "Five Years of Hard Work and Progress". Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the school has trained more than 150,000 high-quality talents. In recent years, the school has undertaken the preparation of the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” to support the development of ethnic minorities with small populations, used its own scientific research advantages to build a number of industrial development platforms serving ethnic areas, and promoted the “Ten Major Projects” such as the National Ethnic Affairs Commission’s liaison officers stationed in the Wuling Mountain area, the “1221” targeted poverty alleviation work, the village-based poverty alleviation work team, the “616” counterpart support for Changyang County, the counterpart support for the Three Gorges Reservoir area resettlement project, targeted assistance to Enshi City’s basic education, the doctoral service team, the “Three Thousand” activity, the deputy county magistrate of science and technology, and the grassroots high-quality development talent support plan. A total of 144 cadres and teachers have been sent, and more than 50 million yuan has been invested in various poverty alleviation special funds. It has successively signed strategic cooperation agreements with Enshi Prefecture, Tongren City, Zhangjiajie City, Xiangxi Prefecture, Huaihua City, Qianxinan Prefecture, etc., and comprehensively strengthened in-depth cooperation with Wuling Mountain area, Balin Youqi, Debao County, Le’an County and other regions in the fields of talent training, think tank services, scientific research and achievement transformation, cultural construction, and expansion of agricultural product sales channels. The school has established inter-school exchanges and cooperation with more than 50 universities abroad, and has carried out in-depth cooperation such as joint training, mutual visits and mutual learning with dozens of domestic universities such as Wuhan University and Chongqing University.

The school has achieved remarkable results in cultivating people with moral integrity. The school has thoroughly studied and implemented the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and continued to implement the spirit of the Central Nationalities Work Conference, the National National Unity and Progress Commendation Conference, the National College Ideological and Political Work Conference and the National Education Conference. Focusing on the theme of "The Chinese nation is one family, working together to build the Chinese dream", it has vigorously carried out "five identities" education and has been awarded the titles of "Model Unit for National Unity and Progress", "Model Collective for National Unity and Progress", and "National Model University for the Creation of National Unity and Progress" by the State Council, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Hubei Province, and Wuhan City. It has been rated as an "Advanced Unit for Party Building Work", "Advanced Party Committee Central Group", and "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization" by the Hubei Provincial Party Committee for many times. It has been rated as the best civilized unit in Hubei Province for 19 consecutive years, and has won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Campus Culture Construction of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education and Hubei Province for many consecutive years.
