Hubei Medical College

Hubei Medical College is a general higher education institution with medicine as its main discipline and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as medicine, science, engineering, and management. It is the only independent general higher medical college of Western medicine in Hubei Province and the adjacent areas of Hubei, Henan, Chongqing, and Shaanxi. The school is located in the center of Shiyan, one of the "Top Ten Charming Cities in China" - the location of "Taoist Holy Land Wudang Mountain and China's Water Capital Danjiangkou". The school covers an area of ​​574 acres and currently has 17,228 full-time undergraduate and graduate students (including independent colleges) and 684 international students.

The school was founded in 1965, formerly known as the Yunyang Branch of Wuhan Medical College. It started general undergraduate education in 1977, was renamed Tongji Medical University Yunyang Medical College in 1986, and was independently established and named Yunyang Medical College in 1994. It was renamed Hubei Medical College in 2010 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 1995, it began to jointly train master's students. In 1996, it was the first batch of undergraduate qualification assessments of ordinary colleges and universities in the country. In 2006, it accepted the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of Education and obtained an excellent conclusion. In 2013, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree awarding institution. In the same year, it began to hold undergraduate and graduate education for international students. In 2017, it passed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education. In the same year, the main discipline of clinical medicine entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. In 2018, the school officially entered the "Double First-Class" construction square of Hubei Province. The school is a national civilized unit and a national civilized campus; a "double first-class" construction university in Hubei Province and a doctoral degree authorization unit project construction university; a general medical education and free medical student training base in Hubei Province, a public health talent training base in Hubei Province; a national clinical teaching and training demonstration center.

The school adheres to the spirit of "hard work, self-improvement, virtue and benefit the world, and encourage learning and education", abides by the school motto of "virtue, diligence, truth-seeking, and innovation", and adheres to the talent training characteristics of "medical ethics, humanities, solid foundation, and practice". Based in Hubei, facing the whole country, focusing on the central and western regions, we strive to cultivate applicable medical talents with good professional ethics, solid foundation, strong practical ability, and innovative consciousness and ability. There are 18 secondary colleges, offering 22 undergraduate majors including clinical medicine, anesthesiology, nursing, medical imaging, stomatology, pharmacy, public utilities management, biological sciences, applied psychology, preventive medicine, and intelligent medical engineering. It has 4 national first-class undergraduate majors or characteristic construction majors, 11 provincial first-class undergraduate majors or brand (construction) majors; it has 1 national first-class course, 1 national course ideological and political demonstration course, 21 national and provincial quality courses, 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and undertakes 2 national "Excellent Physician Training Program" projects, 7 national and provincial "Professional Comprehensive Reform" projects and a number of provincial major teaching research projects. It recruits students from 31 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country. The employment rate of graduates has been improving, higher than the national and provincial average level of similar colleges and universities. A total of nearly 110,000 medical talents of all levels and types have been sent to the country and society.

The school currently has 1,044 faculty and staff, including 469 master's supervisors, 282 senior professional teachers, and 211 doctors. It has 11 provincial excellent teaching teams and 10 provincial excellent grassroots teaching organizations. It has 112 national and provincial talents, and 66 experts who enjoy special allowances from the State Council, provincial and municipal governments. More than 40 people (times) have won honorary titles such as "Model Worker" at the national and provincial levels, "May 1st Labor Medal", "National Excellent Teacher", and "Famous Teacher of Hubei".

The school insists on taking discipline construction as the leader. The main discipline of clinical medicine entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking in 2017 and was promoted to the top 5‰ in 2021. There are currently 3 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees and 5 master's professional degree authorization points; 3 provincial key first-level disciplines of clinical medicine, basic medicine, and nursing; 3 provincial advantageous and characteristic discipline groups of modern medicine, public health and health, and biology and medicine; 10 "Chutian Scholars Program" disciplines such as surgery, internal medicine, human anatomy and histology, and anesthesiology. There are 1 academician expert workstation, 1 national third-level laboratory of traditional Chinese medicine, 21 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, 4 provincial school-enterprise co-construction R&D centers, and 6 municipal school-enterprise co-construction R&D centers. It has the largest medical library in the middle and western regions of the country, with a collection of more than 1.3 million books. It has purchased 22 Chinese and foreign databases, including the "China Biomedical Literature Database", "China Knowledge Network Database", "Weipu Zhilifang", "Wanfang Medical Network", "SCI (Web of Science)", and "PHMC Electronic Journal Full-text Database" under the ProQuest platform. The "Journal of Hubei Medical College" is included in the "Chemical Abstracts" of the United States, and is a statistical source journal of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and is publicly issued at home and abroad. In recent years, the university has undertaken 1,075 vertical projects of various levels and types, including 80 national projects and 110 provincial and ministerial projects. It has won 33 provincial science and technology awards and 172 municipal science and technology awards, and won the first prize of provincial science and technology progress as the first completing unit for the first time; 452 authorized patents have been obtained, 76 academic works have been published, and 1,410 high-quality papers have been published. Among them, the papers published by Professor Liu Zhongwu and Professor Li Jian in Nature and New England Journal of Medicine have attracted great attention from domestic and foreign industry insiders; the Hubei Province Health Poverty Alleviation Survey Report and the Suggestions on the Construction of Rural E-commerce in the Left and Right Jiang Revolutionary Old Areas to Promote Rural Revitalization Demonstration Zones have been approved and adopted by the main leaders of Hubei Province and Guizhou Province respectively. The school attaches great importance to the cooperation between government, industry, academia and research, and has signed 70 cooperation agreements with governments and key biopharmaceutical companies such as Danjiangkou City and Fang County, undertaken 56 cooperation projects, and selected 36 people to participate in the provincial "three districts" talent plan, actively serving regional economic development and industrial transformation and upgrading; Hubei Technology Exchange Hubei Medical College Branch Station has been built.

The school adheres to the concept of open education and is a window for international exchanges and cooperation in the Qinba Mountain area. It has hired 162 scholars from home and abroad as visiting professors, academic leaders and academic backbones, and introduced 10 overseas scholars in a flexible way, of which 8 were approved as "Chutian Scholars" lecture professors in Hubei Province. At present, it maintains good cooperation and exchange relations with foreign universities such as Tulane University, Wright State University, California State University (Northridge), University of Leicester, De Montfort University, and University of Sydney, Australia. The school has 6 third-level comprehensive affiliated hospitals with certain influence in the country. The affiliated Taihe Hospital is a "National Civilized Unit" and a "National May 1st Labor Award Advanced Collective", and has the only embryonic stem cell research center in northwestern Hubei. The affiliated Dongfeng Hospital is a "National People's Hospital" and a "National Top 100 Hospitals", and has the qualification to carry out organ transplantation. The affiliated People's Hospital is a "National People's Trustworthy Hospital" and a "Three-Class Demonstration Hospital". It is the first batch of hospitals in the country's prefecture-level hospitals to be approved by the Ministry of Health to carry out "Human Assisted Reproductive Technology" business. The affiliated Xiangyang Hospital is a "National People's Trustworthy Demonstration Hospital" and a "National Advanced Unit for Protecting Consumer Rights". It is a network hospital of the International Emergency Rescue Center and a training base for general practitioners in Hubei Province. The affiliated Suizhou Hospital is a "Hubei Province Three-Class Excellent Hospital" and a "National People's Trustworthy Demonstration Hospital". The affiliated Ankang Central Hospital is a "National Advanced Collective of the Medical and Health System", "Shaanxi Top Ten Hospitals", "Shaanxi Civilized Unit" and "National Baby-Friendly Hospital". The total number of beds in the six affiliated hospitals is 15,000, the annual outpatient volume is nearly 10 million (times), and the inpatient volume exceeds 500,000 (times). There are 3 national key specialties and 112 provincial key specialties. There are more than 50 clinical teaching and internship hospitals. A 700-kilometer-long medical education corridor has been formed in the central and western regions of Hubei and the Hanjiang River Basin.

The school is a "garden-style campus" in Hubei Province. The campus environment is beautiful and the cultural atmosphere is rich; the wind and smoke are clear, and the Tianshan Mountains are of the same color; the strange rocks and trees compete with each other, and the lakes and mountains complement each other. Every year, more than 5 school-wide theme cultural festivals and more than 40 special cultural activities of colleges and departments are held regularly, and more than 100 academic lectures are held.
