National Defense University

The predecessor of the National University of Defense Technology was the Military Engineering College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, which was founded in Harbin in 1953. It was the famous "Harbin Military Engineering College". General Chen Geng served as the first president and political commissar. "Harbin Military Engineering College" was founded during the Korean War and is the first higher military engineering college in New China. Its outstanding educational achievements have created a monument in the history of national defense science and technology and higher education in my country. In 1970, the main body of the college moved south to Changsha and was renamed Changsha Institute of Technology. In 1978, it was rebuilt into the National University of Defense Technology of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. In 1999, Changsha Artillery College, Changsha Engineering Corps College and Changsha Political College were merged into the National University of Defense Technology. In 2017, the Central Military Commission decided to rebuild the National University of Defense Technology based on the National University of Defense Technology, the University of International Relations, the National Defense Information College, the Xi'an Communication College, the School of Electronic Engineering, and the School of Meteorology and Oceanography of the University of Science and Technology, and assigned the 63rd Institute of the Equipment Development Department of the Military Commission to the National University of Defense Technology, which is under the leadership of the Military Commission.

The construction and development of the school has always received the cordial care of the Party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission. When the Military Engineering College was founded, Chairman Mao Zedong personally issued the "Instructions" to the college and wrote the name "Engineering" for the college journal. In 1978, the school was rebuilt into the National University of Defense Technology under the direct care of Chairman Deng Xiaoping. In 1999, Chairman Jiang Zemin signed an order to establish a new National University of Defense Technology, and in 2003 wrote the school motto of "Virtue and Knowledge, Strengthen the Army and Revitalize the Country" for the school, and issued a call to "work hard to build the National University of Defense Technology into a world-class university with the characteristics of our army." In 2007, President Hu Jintao made an important instruction on the successful development of a major scientific research project of the school, encouraging the school to "make new and greater contributions to promoting the strategy of strengthening the military through science and technology and building an innovative country". President Xi is very concerned about the construction of the school. On November 5, 2013, President Xi visited the school and delivered an important speech, requiring "to accelerate the construction of a world-class university with the characteristics of our army, and strive to make the National University of Defense Technology a highland for the cultivation of high-quality new military talents and a highland for independent innovation in national defense science and technology." On July 19, 2017, President Xi presented the military flag to the school and delivered a speech, pointing out: "The National University of Defense Technology is a highland for the cultivation of high-quality new military talents and independent innovation in national defense science and technology. The construction and development of the school has always been highly valued by the state and the military. It is one of the 156 key construction projects of the first five-year plan, one of the 20 key universities in the country determined by the CPC Central Committee in 1959, the first batch of institutions approved by the State Council to confer master's and doctoral degrees, the first batch of institutions in the country to pilot graduate schools, the first batch of institutions to enter the national "211 Project" construction plan, the military "2110 Project" key construction institutions, "double" construction institutions, the only military institution to enter the national "985 Project" construction ranks, and the only military "double first-class" construction university.

The school has formed a comprehensive discipline and professional system of "engineering-oriented, combining science, engineering, military, management and literature, strengthening the foundation, and implementing engineering", covering 8 categories including science, engineering, military science, management, philosophy, economics, law, and literature, with 46 undergraduate education majors, 26 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 23 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points. In the fourth round of national first-level discipline overall level assessment, the school was rated as having 8 A-level disciplines, including 4 A+-level disciplines, 3 A-level disciplines, and 1 A-level discipline. The number of A+-level disciplines ranked 11th among universities nationwide.
