Jeff Nishinaka is a Los Angeles-based paper sculptor whose handmade works are commissioned by private and public companies and celebrities around the world. From the ethereal lines of mythological creatures to the geometric shapes of urban landscapes, Nishinaka creates monochrome relief objects inspired by fantasy and reality. His fascination with art began at a young age when he was a fan of Norman Rockwell, 1960s comics, Marvel Comics, and the Japanese manga Astro Boy. After attending UCLA, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the renowned Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. As an art student, paper became Nishinaka's medium of choice. Instead of choosing matchsticks, nails, or clay for his class projects, he challenged himself by creating multi-dimensional fish sculptures out of paper. During this creative process, he felt compelled to discover new ways to shape, bend, and round edges on different types of paper. He felt destined to become a paper artist. Nishinaka’s work has been featured in numerous galleries, public art displays, retail displays, and advertising campaigns for clients such as Microsoft, Starbucks, Ralph Lauren, United Airlines, Clinique, MGM Studios, Lexus, Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Qualcomm, and Igersson Paperboard. He has created over 40 custom sculptures for martial arts expert and actor Jackie Chan. His work has been touted by art publications from around the world and media outlets such as USA Today, The New York Times, V Magazine, and The Atlantic Monthly. The artist attributes his successful 30-year career to his special relationship with paper. He feels the medium has its own energy and life, and it is his duty to release or reveal what is already there. He tries not to overwork or force the paper into submission, letting the paper’s beauty speak for itself. Each sculpture begins with an idea, a rough sketch, and research. When ready for construction, Nishinaka uses simple tools: pencil, X-Acto knife, dowels, tweezers, glue, and an eraser. Above all, his most precious tool is his hands. For him, the human touch lends a texture that cannot be achieved digitally. Nishinaka holds himself to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship, crafting each element of a structure with extreme precision, patience, and passion. For Nishinaka, creating art for clients is just as fun as teaching it. He is an instructor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and says that "young minds" inspire and motivate him to continually perfect his skills. In addition to teaching, Nishinaka enjoys traveling, playing drums, building model airplanes, and sharing his craft tips with his social media followers.

Retina ize It - The best Photoshop operation for designing or optimizing Retina display websites

The best Photoshop operation for designing for iOS (supporting iPhone 6/Plus) or optimizing for Retina display websites What does it include? There are three actions in the package: 1x is only used for slicing selected layers/groups and is very suitable for quickly exporting elements in their original size. 1x, 2x are used to slice and scale the selected elements by 200% version. Very suitable for Retina ready websites. 1x, 2x, 3x+scaling 200%+scaling 300% of the selected element. Very suitable for iOS assets. What should I remember? Process shapes or intelligent objects. In addition, I suggest working on the design of non retinal PSD versions (1x). I explained the reason in an article in Smash Magazine. If you use projection or inner shadow properties on the layers you want to slice, remember that the 'Use global lighting' checkbox is not selected. Otherwise, the angle of the shadow will be changed to the default angle set in Photoshop (thanks to Nils Helmersson). Who is it for? It is very suitable for designers and front-end developers who need to separate UI elements from the PSD of iOS or Retina ready websites. How to install? Just double-click the file to enter the window ->actions in Photoshop. Expand the 'Retinize It' folder in the action window. Who did it? Hi, I am Artiom Dashinsky, a product designer working in Tel Aviv and Berlin. I am a former senior product designer at WeWork, founder of Swag Fair, and author of "Solving Product Design Exercises" and "Generating Product Ideas". Please feel free to contact us via email at any time. The original action is adapted from Scott Bates' "The Best Photoshop Exported Action of All Time". The difference lies in the scaling ratio - my team and I always design at 1x resolution and scale 200% before sending it to developers, mainly due to the 0.5px issue (you can learn more from Niklaus Gerber's articles "Designing for iPhone 4" and Bjango's "Designing for Retina Display Screen"), while Scott's scaling ratio is 50%.
