East China Normal University

East China Normal University is a comprehensive research university organized by the state, supervised by the Ministry of Education, and jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The school was founded on October 16, 1951. It was based on Daxia University (1924) and Guanghua University (1925), and some departments and disciplines of universities such as St. John's University, Fudan University, Tongji University and Zhejiang University were transferred in at the same time. It was founded on the original site of Daxia University. In 1959, the school was identified by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as one of the 16 key universities in the country. In 1972, the school merged with Shanghai Normal College, Shanghai Institute of Physical Education and other institutions and was renamed Shanghai Normal University. In 1978, the school was once again confirmed as a national key university. In 1980, the school resumed the name of East China Normal University. In 1986, the school was approved by the State Council to become one of the 33 colleges and universities to establish graduate schools. In 1996, it was included in the ranks of national key universities in the "211 Project". In 1997-1998, Shanghai Preschool Teachers College, Shanghai Education College and Shanghai Second Education College were successively incorporated. In 2002, according to the strategic deployment of the layout and structural adjustment of Shanghai's colleges and universities, the school started the planning and construction of the Minhang campus, and moved the main body to the Minhang campus in 2006, forming a "one school, two campuses, and linked development" school-running pattern. In 2006, the Ministry of Education and Shanghai decided to focus on the joint construction of East China Normal University, and the school entered the ranks of national "985 Project" universities. In 2017, the school entered the A-level ranks of national world-class university construction universities, and fully started a new journey of taking root in China to build a first-class university.

Establish morality and cultivate people, climb high and go far. As the first socialist normal university established after the founding of New China, the school has always adhered to the lofty university ideal of "the creation of wisdom, the cultivation of character, and the development of the nation and society", abided by the school motto of "seeking truth and creation, and being a role model for others", and fully and thoroughly implemented the party's education policy and various decision-making arrangements, implemented the fundamental task of cultivating morality and educating people, and cultivated talents for the party and the country. In accordance with the spirit of the 13th Party Congress of the school and the construction goals and paths determined in the "13th Five-Year Plan" Development Plan and the "World-Class University Construction Plan", centering on the responsibility and mission of "educating people, civilization, and development", we will continue to strengthen comprehensive and strict governance of the party. , promote all-round education for all staff, throughout the whole process, focus on implementing the education and teaching innovation leadership, discipline research optimization and improvement, and national strategic precision docking projects, focus on the five major action plans of "Education +", "Ecology +", "Health +", "Intelligence +", and "International +", and achieve the first-class school-running goal in three steps: build a world-renowned high-level university with distinctive characteristics and outstanding advantages by 2020, approach the level of world-class universities by 2035, and build a world-class university by the middle of this century, in order to achieve the glorious cause of "building a strong country in education" and "strengthening the country with education", and make new and greater contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!

There is also a training center for middle school principals of the Ministry of Education located in the school.

As of November 2021, the university has 31 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 35 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 22 kinds of master's professional degrees, and a doctoral degree in education. It has 26 postdoctoral research stations and 85 undergraduate majors. It has 3 national "Double First-Class" construction disciplines, 2 national first-level key disciplines, 5 national second-level key disciplines, 5 national key cultivation disciplines, 12 Class A disciplines in the fourth round of discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education, 6 Shanghai Peak Disciplines (2 Class I, 2 Class II, 2 Class IV), 12 Shanghai Key Disciplines and 17 Shanghai First-Class Disciplines (4 Class A, 13 Class B). The school has 4,449 faculty and staff, including 2,401 full-time teachers. There are 2,090 professors and other senior professional teachers, including 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including dual-appointed academicians), and 304 people selected for various other talent programs of the state and Shanghai. There are 15,538 full-time undergraduate students, 3,780 doctoral students, 17,238 master's students, and 1,504 international students (degree students). The main campuses of the school are Minhang Campus (address: No. 500, Dongchuan Road, Shanghai) and Zhongshan North Road Campus (address: No. 3663, Zhongshan North Road, Shanghai), and the total campus area is about 207 hectares.

There are 10 bases for the Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program 2.0, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and 9 Shanghai Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. The school sponsors, organizes and co-organizes 23 kinds of Chinese journals and 7 kinds of English journals. The total number of printed documents in the libraries of the two campuses is more than 4.8667 million, and there are 161 electronic document databases (462 sub-databases). The school has established an education group, and currently has 58 affiliated primary and secondary schools and kindergartens (formally enrolling students) run by itself and in cooperation. The school's continuing education insists on the separation of management and operation, actively connects with national strategies, explores and cultivates high-quality non-academic education projects, focuses on promoting connotation-oriented development, and comprehensively improves social and economic efficiency.

The school pays attention to international cooperation and exchanges, and has established close cooperative relations with three French Higher Normal Colleges such as Lyon Normal School, New York University, University of Virginia, University of British Columbia, Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, University of Queensland, University of Tokyo, Japan and other world-renowned universities, and has signed academic cooperation and exchange agreements with more than 300 universities and research institutions in the world. The school has established a Sino-French Joint Graduate School with three French higher normal schools, including the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon; a Sino-French Joint Institute of Society and Science with the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the French National Center for Scientific Research; the Shanghai New York University, co-founded with New York University, is the first Sino-US university with independent legal personality; the Asia-Europe Business School was co-founded with the Lyon Business School in France; the Joint Institute of Translational Science and Technology was co-founded with the University of Haifa in Israel; and the Joint Institute of Advanced Science and Technology was co-founded with the University of Alberta in Canada. The school has an international Chinese teacher training base, and as a Chinese partner school, it has built 4 Confucius Institutes and 2 independent Confucius classrooms.
