Shanghai Jiaotong University is one of the oldest and most famous universities in my country, and is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and co-built with Shanghai. After 126 years of unremitting efforts, Shanghai Jiaotong University has become a first-class domestic and internationally renowned university, and at a new historical node, it has further clarified the vision and goal of building a "comprehensive, innovative, and international" world-class university.

At the end of the 19th century, the defeat in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 was a national crisis. Sheng Xuanhuai, a famous modern Chinese industrialist and educator, upheld the belief that "self-reliance begins with the cultivation of talents, and the cultivation of talents must start with the establishment of schools", and founded the predecessor of Jiaotong University, Nanyang Public School, in Shanghai in 1896. At the beginning of its establishment, the school established the purpose of "seeking practical learning and doing practical business", and took the cultivation of "first-class talents" as its educational goal. It was diligent and enterprising, and worked tirelessly. In the 1920s and 1930s, it had become a famous domestic institution of higher learning and was known as the "Oriental MIT". During the Anti-Japanese War, teachers and students went through hardships, moved to the concession, moved to Chongqing, and insisted on running the school. Many students joined the army and fought on the battlefield. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively participated in the democratic revolution, and the school was known as the "fortress of democracy".

In the early days of the founding of New China, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction and build a higher education system in New China, the school adjusted a considerable number of advantageous majors, teachers and equipment to support the development of domestic brother colleges. In the mid-1950s, the school responded to the call of the country to build the Northwest, and after moving westward and splitting, it was divided into the Shanghai part and Xi'an part of Jiaotong University. In March 1959, the two parts were listed as national key universities at the same time. In July, they were approved by the State Council to be independently established, and the Shanghai part of Jiaotong University adopted the name of "Shanghai Jiaotong University". In the 1960s and 1970s, the school was successively under the leadership of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission and the Sixth Machinery Industry Ministry, and actively engaged in national defense talent training and national defense scientific research, making great contributions to the "two bombs and one satellite" and national defense modernization.

Since the reform and opening up, the school has been determined to promote reform with the spirit of "daring to be the first in the world": it took the lead in forming a professor delegation to visit the United States, took the lead in implementing the reform of the school's internal management system, and took the lead in accepting huge donations from overseas friends, which effectively promoted the school's teaching and scientific research reform. In 1984, Comrade Deng Xiaoping cordially met with school leaders and teachers and students, and fully affirmed the school's various reforms. With the strong support of the country and Shanghai, the school aims to "improve standards and create first-class" and takes discipline construction as the leader. It has successively restored and built science, management, life science, law and humanities. In 1999, Shanghai Agricultural College was incorporated; in 2005, it merged with Shanghai Second Medical University. So far, the school has completed the discipline layout of a comprehensive university. Through the construction of the national "211 Project", "985 Project" and "Double First-Class" projects, the school has gradually gathered high-level talents, rapidly improved its scientific research strength, and realized the transformation into a research-oriented university. At the same time, the school has made important breakthroughs in implementing the internationalization strategy through cooperation with world-class universities such as the University of Michigan in the United States. The construction of the Minhang campus began in 1985. After more than 30 years, it has basically been built into a modern university campus with complete facilities and beautiful environment, and the focus of school operation has been shifted to the Minhang campus. The school currently has campuses in Xuhui, Minhang, Huangpu, Changning, Pudong, etc., with a total area of ​​more than 3 million square meters. Through a series of reforms and construction, the school's various operating indicators have increased significantly, achieving leapfrog development, and significantly enhancing its overall strength, laying a solid foundation for building a world-class university.

Jiaotong University has always regarded talent training as the fundamental task of running a school. Jiaotong University has created many "firsts" in China's modern history: China's earliest internal combustion engine, the earliest electric motor, the earliest Chinese typewriter, etc.; New China's first 10,000-ton ship, the first nuclear submarine, the first hovercraft, the first hydrofoil, the first generation of fighter jets designed independently, the first carrier rocket, the first artificial satellite, the first mitral valve separation, the first successful transplantation of the same type of liver in situ, the first successful rescue of a large area of ​​burn patients, the first university translation and publishing agency, the largest number of local documents, etc., all of which embody the hard work and wisdom of Jiaotong University's teachers, students and alumni. The university has a total of 33 colleges/directly affiliated departments, 12 affiliated hospitals, 2 affiliated medical research institutes, 23 directly affiliated units, and 5 directly affiliated enterprises. In 2019, the "Large Offshore Suction Dredging Equipment" jointly developed by Professor Tan Jiahua's team and six units after "20 years of hard work" won the National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, achieving a historic breakthrough; 7 projects won the National Science and Technology Award, ranking second in the country; 19 achievements won the "Three Major Awards" of the Ministry of Education, ranking first in the country; the total number of National Natural Science Foundation projects has ranked first in the country for 12 consecutive years. In 2020, the university won 8 national science and technology awards as the first completing unit, of which 1 achievement won the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award, ranking second among universities nationwide in terms of the total number of awards; it won 7 first prizes of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award (Science and Technology) of Higher Education Institutions as the first completing unit, ranking third among universities nationwide; it won 1 special prize and 21 first prizes of the Shanghai Science and Technology Award, ranking first in Shanghai for three consecutive years; the number of outstanding papers in 2020 reached 6,891, ranking first among universities nationwide for three consecutive years; in 2021, the publication of papers in top journals such as Nature, Science, and Cell achieved a major leap, publishing 41 CNS papers, of which 17 were first and corresponding authors, breaking through double digits for the first time; think tanks such as the China Urban Governance Research Institute provide advice and enlightenment to the people, and their influence is increasingly evident; based in Shanghai and radiating across the country, the construction of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute and Zhangjiang Science Park is progressing steadily, contributing to the construction of Shanghai as a global science and innovation center.
