Shanghai Ocean University is a multidisciplinary applied research university, jointly established by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the State Oceanic Administration, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. In September 2017, it was selected as a national "world-class discipline construction university".

School motto: Diligence, simplicity and loyalty, established on September 1, 1914. The original intention of the school: Wherever the fishing community goes, the sea power is also there. School tradition: Write papers on the world's oceans and the rivers and lakes of the motherland.

The predecessor of the school was the Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School founded by Zhang Jian and Huang Yanpei in 1912. It has gone through the names of the National Central University Agricultural College Fisheries School, Shanghai Municipal Wusong Fisheries College, and Shanghai Fisheries College. In 1952, it was upgraded to Shanghai Fisheries College, the first undergraduate fishery college in China. In 1972, it moved south to Jimei, Xiamen, and was renamed Xiamen Fisheries College. In 1979, it moved back to Shanghai, restored Shanghai Fisheries College, and retained Xiamen Fisheries College. In 1985, it was renamed Shanghai Fisheries University. In 2008, it was renamed Shanghai Ocean University.

The school has 14 colleges (departments), with nearly 12,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 3,600 full-time graduate students. In 2019, there were a total of 802 international students from 83 countries and regions. There are more than 1,500 faculty and staff, including 900 teaching and research personnel, more than 520 with senior professional and technical positions, and more than 500 doctoral and master's supervisors on campus. There are 28 national talents, 212 provincial and ministerial talents, 9 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance (in service), and 2 members of the 8th Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee.

The school currently has 44 undergraduate majors, 7 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 7 municipal-level, 5 national specialty majors, 1 major with IFT food professional international certification, 1 major with European ASIIN undergraduate engineering certification, and 1 major with China Engineering Education Certification. There are 5 national first-class courses, 21 Shanghai first-class courses, 3 national quality courses, 45 Shanghai quality courses, and demonstration courses, 1 national teaching team, and 4 municipal teaching teams. There are 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 Shanghai experimental teaching demonstration center (project construction), 163 undergraduate teaching practice bases, including 2 overseas practice bases, 3 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and 13 Shanghai-level projects. Since 2013, it has won 6 first prizes and 12 second prizes in Shanghai Teaching Achievements. The school is one of the first batch of pilot schools for the overall reform of ideological and political education and teaching in Shanghai, one of the first batch of demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and one of the demonstration schools for the rule of law in Shanghai. It was selected as the pilot college for the key ideological and political reform of Shanghai universities, the first batch of model branches for party building work in national universities, and the first batch of "double leaders" teacher party branch secretary studios in national universities. The school is one of the first batch of "E-class" pilot units in the country, and has won the special prize for outstanding achievements in campus culture construction in national universities and the first prize of Shanghai Education Reform Experiment Award. The school's college student mental health research and education center has been named "Shanghai University Mental Health Education and Consultation Demonstration Center" by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission for three consecutive rounds. The school's campus culture is rich and colorful, with more than 90 cultural, sports, and scientific and technological student clubs such as college student art troupes; it won the gold medal of the "Chuang Qingchun" National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition and the first prize of the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition. From 2017 to 2019, the student representative team won the silver medal in the World Brain Olympics Finals for three consecutive times, and won the gold and silver medals in the National College Student Art Exhibition for many times. It has been rated as an "Advanced Unit for College Students' Summer Social Practice" for 10 consecutive years. There are cultural and educational venues such as the school history museum (including the three history museums and the campus cultural exhibition hall for college students), museums (including the aquatic biological science and technology museum, whale museum, offshore fishery exhibition hall, "Rainbow Fish" deep-sea science experience base, and "China Fisheries 206").

The school currently has 4 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 13 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 1 second-level discipline master's degree authorization point, 7 professional degree master's degree authorization points, and 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations. It has 1 national first-class construction discipline, 1 national key discipline, 3 peak and plateau disciplines of Shanghai universities, 3 first-class disciplines of Shanghai universities, and 9 provincial and ministerial key disciplines. The three disciplines of plant and animal science, agricultural science, and environment/ecology entered the top 1% of the ESI international discipline rankings in the world, and the fishery discipline received an A+ rating in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation. It has 1 National Engineering Technology Research Center, 1 National Engineering Laboratory, 1 International Joint Research Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 National University Science and Technology Park; more than 30 provincial and ministerial key laboratories and platforms such as the Ministry of Education. It has a number of school-level scientific research platforms, including the International Marine Research Center, the China-Australia International Cooperation Research Center, the International Compliance Research Center for Offshore Fisheries, and the Institute of Marine Sciences. It has the "Songhang", my country's first offshore fishery resource survey ship, and the only ship ballast water laboratory in my country with CNAS, CMA, DNV GL and USCG qualifications. It has built the largest dynamic water tank in Asia and the third largest in the world. It has developed a 10,000-meter-class lander that successfully reached a depth of 10,918 meters. It is the guiding unit of the Shanghai Fisheries Society, the Shanghai Food Society, and the Shanghai Fisheries Economic Research Association. Since 2011, it has achieved a number of breakthrough research results in natural sciences and humanities and social sciences, and won 1 national science and technology progress award and 36 provincial and ministerial awards as the first completing unit. The school has played its disciplinary and scientific research advantages and achieved remarkable results in serving the society. Since 2011, the school has assisted farmers in Miaoli County, Taiwan in breeding hairy crabs, creating a model for cross-strait agricultural cooperation; it has established a "Fishery Science and Technology Professor and Doctor Service Team" to carry out scientific and technological services throughout the country, helping Tibet, Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Guizhou and other places with targeted poverty alleviation, with remarkable results. The project was selected as a typical project of the second provincial college targeted poverty alleviation and targeted poverty alleviation by the Ministry of Education; the offshore fishery international compliance team has been fully responsible for fulfilling the regional fisheries management convention on behalf of the country since the 1990s, and has made important contributions to safeguarding the rights and interests of my country's offshore fisheries, and was selected as the first batch of "National College Huang Danian-style Teacher Team".

The school currently has two campuses, Shanghai Pudong New Area Hucheng Ring Road Campus and Yangpu District Jungong Road Campus, as well as a 386-acre Binhai Base and a 56.7-acre Xiangshan Science and Education Base. Among them, the main campus Hucheng Ring Road Campus covers an area of ​​about 1,600 acres, with a planned construction area of ​​586,000 square meters. It has a modern campus network, and has built a Chinese offshore fishery data center and a marine science supercomputing center. There are more than 1.54 million paper books, nearly 1.12 million electronic books, and more than 50 databases. The collection resources highlight the school's marine, aquatic, and food characteristics. In 2016, it hosted the first English journal Aquaculture and Fisheries in mainland China, which was included in Scopus, the American Life Science Abstracts Index Database (BP), and the Biological Abstracts (BA) database. The "Journal of Fisheries of China" and "Journal of Shanghai Ocean University" hosted by the school are Chinese core journals, Chinese science and technology core journals, and source journals of the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD). Among them, "Journal of Fisheries of China" has won the titles of "Top 100 Chinese Newspapers and Periodicals", "Chinese Fine Periodicals", and "100 Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals".

The school has close exchanges and cooperation with universities in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Portugal, Australia, Ghana and other countries (regions) and international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), and has signed cooperation agreements with 139 universities and research institutions in 35 countries and regions. Since 2011, more than 4,440 students have been sent through study tours and exchange programs; the two phases of the "Asian Campus" "Joint Education Program in the Field of Marine Science and Technology Based on the 'China-Japan-Korea Education Integration'" with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and Korea Maritime and Ocean University, the short-term and double degree study programs such as the Erasmus program with Spain and Portugal, and the China Scholarship Council's international cooperation training program for innovative talents, etc., have provided a platform for Chinese and foreign teachers and students to further expand their international vision, cultivate international communication skills, and enhance international competitiveness.

The development goal of the school in the new era is: by 2035, it will become a high-level characteristic university with important international influence. By the middle of this century, the school will be built into a world-class characteristic university.
