Shanghai University of Technology was founded in 1954 and is the first high-level applied innovation university in China named after "applied technology". The school is a doctoral degree-granting institution, selected as a key construction unit of Shanghai's high-level local universities, the first batch of Shanghai's first-class undergraduate construction leading plan and first-class graduate education leading plan, the first batch of Shanghai's demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, the pilot university for the overall reform of Shanghai's curriculum ideological and political education, the national intellectual property pilot university, the Shanghai patent work demonstration unit, and the Shanghai model school for rule of law. Since 2018, it has ranked first for four consecutive years among the same type of universities in the Shanghai university classification evaluation.

The school has distinctive professional characteristics and a reasonable discipline layout. There are 19 secondary colleges (departments), 55 undergraduate majors, covering 8 major disciplines such as engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, agriculture, and art, including 15 national and Shanghai first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 11 Shanghai application-oriented undergraduate pilot majors; 5 majors have passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification, and 1 major has passed the international professional certification. It has established a characteristic discipline group led by "Fragrances, Fragrances, Cosmetics and Green Chemical Industry" and coordinated by "Functional New Materials, Intelligent Technology and Advanced Manufacturing" and "Design, Culture and Innovation and Management"; Chemistry, Materials Science, Agricultural Science and Engineering Science are in the top 1% of ESI global rankings; it has 6 provincial and ministerial key disciplines; 1 first-level discipline authorized for doctoral degree, 8 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degree, and 11 categories of master's professional degree authorization. It has 6 national disciplinary platforms, including the National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for Flavors and Cosmetics, the National Rare Earth New Materials Testing and Evaluation Industry Center, and the Provincial and Ministerial Collaborative Innovation Center for Flavors and Cosmetics; it has 16 provincial and ministerial disciplinary platforms, including the Engineering Research Center for Flavors and Cosmetics of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) Superhard Coating and Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center, Shanghai Green FluoroPharmaceutical Engineering Technology Research Center, Shanghai Optical Detection Materials and Devices Engineering Technology Research Center, and Shanghai Food Flavor and Quality Control Engineering Technology Research Center; it has jointly built industrial research institutes, Shanghai University Science and Technology Parks, Shanghai Entrepreneurship College, China-Europe Intellectual Property College and various collaborative innovation institutes, industry-university-research workstations, technology transfer centers and other high-level technology innovation and achievement incubation platforms with local governments, leading enterprises, and scientific research institutes. The school has a strong faculty and a reasonable team structure. There are more than 1,700 faculty members, including 1,261 full-time teachers, 586 teachers with senior professional and technical positions, 37 doctoral supervisors, and 812 "double-qualified" teachers; there are 159 high-level talents at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including 22 national talents and 137 provincial and ministerial talents, forming a high-level talent team led by national talents, supported by provincial and ministerial leading talents, and outstanding young and middle-aged backbones. There are 4 undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs; it has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 120 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries (regions) such as Europe, America, Asia, Oceania, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and the number of universities with mutual recognition of credits has reached 51; in recent years, more than 2,000 students have been sent to study and exchange at overseas institutions. Give full play to the advantages of disciplines, cooperate with industry leaders to build the first international cosmetics college in China, and co-build the China-Europe Intellectual Property College with internationally renowned universities. In recent years, the school has actively implemented the national "Belt and Road" initiative, opened a Laotian railway engineering talent class, and cultivated high-quality railway engineering and technical talents for countries along the "Belt and Road". It has been approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Asian Cooperation Fund Projects, approved the Shanghai "Belt and Road" China-Laos Railway Engineering International Joint Laboratory, and established the "Belt and Road" Lancang-Mekong Railway Interconnection Center, and continued to promote high-level international collaborative education and collaborative scientific and technological innovation.
