University of Shanghai for Science and Technology

University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is a key applied research university in Shanghai with engineering as its main discipline and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, and art. In 2018, the school became a pilot unit for the construction of "high-level local universities" in Shanghai.

The school's educational context can be traced back to Hujiang University, which was founded in 1906, and Dewen Medical and Engineering School, which was founded in 1907. In 1906, the American Christian Southern and Northern Baptist Church founded Hujiang University on the banks of the Pujiang River in Shanghai. In 1928, Liu Zhan'en served as the first Chinese president of Hujiang University, and the school was fully incorporated into the Chinese national education system. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the relevant disciplines of Hujiang University were adjusted to various universities in East China. At the same time, Shanghai Industrial School was established on the site of Hujiang University, and later renamed Shanghai Mechanical College (1959), Shanghai Mechanical Institute (1960-1994), and East China University of Technology (1994-1996). In 1907, German doctor Dr. Paulon opened the German Medical School, and in 1912, the Engineering School was added. In 1922, the Chinese and French governments jointly established the Sino-French National Institute of Technology on the original site of the German Medical and Engineering School. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, it merged with the National Advanced Machinery Vocational School that moved from Chongqing to Shanghai to form the National Shanghai Advanced Machinery Vocational School. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was restructured into Shanghai Advanced Machinery Vocational School, and later renamed Shanghai Mechanical College (1983-1996). In 1996, East China University of Technology and Shanghai Mechanical College merged to form Shanghai University of Technology. In 1998, the school was transferred to Shanghai for management by the Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 2003, Shanghai Medical Device College (Shanghai Health Medical College was established in 2015) and Shanghai Publishing and Printing College were transferred to the management of Shanghai University of Technology. The towering university has gone through a century of vicissitudes, passed on the torch, and continued to sing. It has nurtured a large number of patriotic young people and people with lofty ideals, nurtured a large number of academic elites, engineering experts and social leaders, and cultivated more than 100,000 outstanding professionals for the country and society. It enjoys the reputation of China's "Huangpu Military Academy of Manufacturing". The school has condensed the school motto of "faith, diligence, love, thinking and ambition" in the integration of inheritance and innovation, which inspires the new era of Shanghai University of Technology to keep the truth and innovate, and forge ahead.

The school covers an area of nearly 1,000 acres. It has 17 colleges (departments) and more than 27,000 full-time students, including more than 18,000 undergraduates and more than 9,000 graduate students. There are more than 2,900 faculty and staff, including 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including dual appointments), 75 national talents, 189 provincial and ministerial talents, 859 teachers with senior professional titles, and 260 doctoral supervisors.

The school has long relied on, served and led the development of the industry, and is a backbone university in the equipment manufacturing, medical device, publishing and printing industries. Disciplines such as power engineering and engineering thermal physics, optical engineering, management science and engineering have long been in a leading position in China, and have a deep industry foundation in the two major fields of medical devices and publishing and printing. In recent years, the school's discipline layout has been continuously optimized. There are currently 60 undergraduate majors, 8 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 6 postdoctoral research work mobile stations, 27 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 18 master's professional degree categories. It has 19 national teaching platforms and 51 provincial and ministerial platforms, 7 national scientific research platforms and 34 provincial and ministerial platforms. The three disciplines of engineering, materials science and chemistry are firmly in the top 1% of ESI worldwide. The school actively connects with the strategic needs of the country and Shanghai, and uses the three international laboratories of future optics, intelligent manufacturing, medical devices and rehabilitation engineering and one characteristic platform of system management as carriers to build five first-class disciplines of optical engineering, system science, power engineering and engineering thermal physics, mechanical engineering, and biomedical engineering, as well as the plateau discipline of management science, and continues to support the development of various supporting disciplines to accelerate the construction of a high-level university.

The school always adheres to the fundamental task of cultivating people with morality, carries forward the tradition of running schools relying on industries and combining production, learning and research, and cultivates high-quality talents with "engineering, innovative and internationalization". The school continues to implement the concept of "connecting with industries, transforming majors, and guiding employment". Undergraduate education emphasizes "thick foundation, broad caliber, strong practice", and graduate education focuses on "interdisciplinary, innovation, and close to the industry". The school is a "university of excellent engineer education and training program" of the Ministry of Education, "university implementing the national college student innovation and entrepreneurship training program", "national talent training model innovation experimental zone", "national innovative talent training demonstration base", "national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform", and "national innovation and entrepreneurship typical experience university".

The school is one of the earliest universities in China to run international cooperative education. There are nearly 1,000 international students on campus. It has established cooperative relations with more than 170 colleges and universities in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, Ireland, etc., and has established two Sino-foreign cooperative education institutions, the Sino-British International College and the Sino-German International College.

The school has always adhered to the strategy of coordinated development. The "Yangtze River Delta Higher Engineering Education Alliance" was jointly established with Nanjing University of Technology, Zhejiang University of Technology, Jiangsu University, and Anhui University of Technology; the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Research Institute was jointly established with the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association; the "Medical and Engineering Cross-Innovation Research Institute" and the "Medical and Engineering Cross-Innovation Graduate School" were jointly established with the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University; the "Shanghai Institute of Common Technology for Mechanical Industry" and the "Shanghai Graduate School for Mechanical Industry" were jointly established with Shanghai Industrial Automation Instrumentation Research Institute, Shanghai Power Generation Equipment Complete Design Research Institute, Shanghai Electric Science Research Institute, Shanghai Cable Research Institute, Shanghai Materials Research Institute, Shanghai Electric Tool Research Institute, Shanghai Industrial Boiler Research Institute, Shanghai Electric Group Central Research Institute, etc.; and comprehensive cooperation was carried out with enterprises and institutions such as COMAC, Huawei, Shanghai Electric, Bright Food (Group), Bank of China Shanghai Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch, and Nuclear Research Institute No. 8. Relying on the construction of the National University Science and Technology Park and nearly 30 technology transfer workstations distributed in the Yangtze River Delta region of Shanghai University of Technology, actively carry out the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and industrial incubation, and cooperate with Yangpu District to promote the development of the innovation district around Shanghai University of Technology.

At the new starting point, the school will keep pace with the times, fully implement the goals and tasks set by the 8th Party Congress of the school, reform and innovate, forge ahead with determination, and strive to build the school into an innovative university that leads industrial technological progress as soon as possible, and then build it into a first-class science and engineering university with distinctive characteristics.
