Shanghai University of Finance and Economics originated from the business department founded by Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1917. Yang Xingfo, a famous social activist and patriotic democrat, served as the director of the business department. In 1921, with the implementation of the plan to build the National Southeast University based on Nanjing Higher Normal School, the business department was expanded, reorganized and moved to Shanghai, and the National Southeast University was established with Shanghai University of Commerce. This is the earliest business university in the history of Chinese education. Guo Bingwen, a famous educator, served as the president, and Ma Yinchu, a famous economist, served as the dean of academic affairs.

In 1932, the school was independently established and named the National Shanghai Business School. At that time, it was the only national undergraduate university of business in China. In 1950, the school was renamed Shanghai Institute of Finance and Economics. Famous economists Sun Yefang and Yao Nai successively served as deans. In 1985, the school was renamed Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the Shanghai Municipal Government signed an agreement to jointly build Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2017, the school entered the national "Double First-Class" construction sequence, opening a new chapter in striving towards the goal of Chinese characteristics and world-class.

After several generations of hard work and hard work, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has become a multi-disciplinary key university with economic management as the main discipline, and coordinated development of economics, management, law, literature, and science.
