Shanghai University of Engineering Science is a full-time general college with engineering, economics, management, art, design and other disciplines interpenetrating and developing in a coordinated manner. It is one of the first pilot colleges of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", the leading unit of the construction of new engineering disciplines in local colleges and universities nationwide, and the pilot construction unit of Shanghai's "High-level Local Applied Colleges and Universities". In 2017, it was listed as a project construction unit for Shanghai's doctoral degree-granting institutions.

The predecessor of the school was the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiaotong University, founded in 1978, the Branch of Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology (incorporated into the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1984) and the Branch of Shanghai Institute of Textile Technology (renamed the Branch of East China Institute of Textile Technology in 1980). In 1985, Shanghai University of Engineering Science was established on the basis of the above-mentioned colleges and universities. In 2003, Shanghai Advanced Technical School (founded in 1951) was transferred to Shanghai University of Engineering Science.

The school has campuses in Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou, covering an area of ​​1,476 acres, with a total construction area of ​​715,000 square meters, a total fixed asset of about 3.2 billion yuan, and teaching and scientific research equipment of about 1 billion yuan. There are currently teaching institutions such as the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the School of Management, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Materials Engineering, the School of Art and Design, the Sino-Korean Multimedia Design School, the School of Aviation Transportation (Flight School), the School of Textiles and Clothing, the School of Urban Rail Transit, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, the School of International Education, the School of Continuing Education, the Higher Vocational and Technical College, the Department of Physical Education, the Engineering Training Center, etc. It has a national experimental teaching demonstration center, a national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and a national university science and technology park.

The school currently has 11 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 8 master's professional degree authorization points, and 64 undergraduate majors; 7 majors including mechanical engineering, fashion design and engineering, vehicle engineering, computer science and technology, pharmaceutical engineering, environmental engineering, and business administration have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction points, and 11 majors including flight technology, transportation, chemical engineering and technology, product design, textile engineering, automation, art and technology, tourism management (cruise economy), aircraft manufacturing engineering, polymer materials and engineering, information management and information systems have been selected as Shanghai's first-class undergraduate major construction points; 8 majors including environmental engineering, transportation, fashion design and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, mechanical engineering, automation, computer science and technology, and pharmaceutical engineering have passed the engineering education certification; the vehicle engineering major has passed the German ASIIN certification.

The school is committed to deepening education and teaching reforms and improving the quality of talent training. Adhering to the school-running purpose of relying on modern industries to run schools and serve economic and social development, guided by the needs of modern industrial development, the discipline groups and professional groups are connected with the industrial chain and technology chain. With the industry-university-research strategic alliance as a platform, we have jointly built a "four-cooperation" model of collaborative school-running, collaborative education, collaborative innovation, and collaborative employment with industries and enterprises, and an industry-university cooperative education model of "three semesters a year, alternating between work and study", helping the school become a cradle for cultivating outstanding engineers and engineering service talents. There are nearly 24,000 full-time students, including nearly 4,400 master's students. Graduates have significant employment competitive advantages and are generally welcomed by employers. In 2021, under the influence of the epidemic, the employment rate reached 97.66%, continuing to be at the forefront of similar universities.

The school adheres to the discipline-led approach and continues to enhance the core innovation of scientific research. The disciplines of engineering and materials science are among the top 1% in the world in ESI; it has one Shanghai Category III peak discipline, one Category IV peak discipline, and 18 provincial disciplinary research platforms such as collaborative innovation centers, R&D public service platforms, engineering technology research centers, and university think tanks; it has established an advanced research institute that brings together a team of high-end talents to create a special scientific research zone. Since 2016, the school has been approved as the first unit for 174 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 1 joint fund key project, and in 2020, it was approved for the Ministry of Science and Technology's Science and Technology Innovation 2030-"New Generation Artificial Intelligence" major project; 51 National Social Science Foundation projects were approved as the first unit, including 1 National Social Science Foundation key project in 2021; 1 major research project of philosophy and social science research of the Ministry of Education, 1 key project of the Ministry of Education's National Education Science Planning, 5 National Art Fund projects, and more than 500 provincial and ministerial projects; 29 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards were won as the first unit, including 1 first prize; 11 provincial and ministerial philosophy and social science awards, including 1 first prize; more than 3,200 patents were authorized.

The school regards the cultivation of a high-quality and high-level talent team as a top priority. There are 1,983 faculty and staff, including 1,553 full-time teachers, 60% of whom have doctoral degrees, and 639 senior professional and technical positions. The school currently has 23 national talents of various types, including 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 2 dual-appointed academicians). There are 9 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, and 102 provincial and ministerial talents and talent projects have been approved.

The school adheres to the concept of open education and has created a rich and diverse overseas learning and exchange platform and channels for students. At present, the school has established cooperative relations with more than 90 universities or institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, etc. There are Sino-Korean, Sino-French and Sino-Swiss cooperative education projects, providing more than 90 overseas learning and exchange programs such as joint doctoral training, joint master and undergraduate dual degree training, mutual recognition of credits, graduation design, overseas internships, international industry-university cooperation, and international sister cities. The school receives international students from more than 60 countries every year, including Germany, France, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia, etc.

Along with the process of comprehensively deepening reform and development of higher education in my country, the school is guiding the reform, transformation and development of the school's education with Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
