East China University of Political Science and Law

East China University of Political Science and Law is one of the first higher political science and law schools founded in New China. In June 1952, with the approval of the East China Military and Political Committee, the law, political and social departments of nine universities including St. John's University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Soochow University, Xiamen University, Hujiang University, Anhui University, Shanghai College and Aurora University were merged to form East China University of Political Science and Law at the former site of St. John's University. In 1958, the school was merged into the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; in 1963, it was rebuilt and enrolled students the following year; in 1966, it stopped enrolling students and was abolished in 1972; in March 1979, it was approved by the State Council to reopen the school for the second time. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed East China University of Political Science and Law. The school is a university managed by Shanghai. The current party secretary is Professor Guo Weilu and the president is Professor Ye Qing.

Over the years, Huazheng people have followed the school motto of "Practice diligently to gain knowledge, be virtuous and respect the law", and carried forward the spirit of "rise in adversity, forge ahead in distress, and excel in glory". The school has been built into a multidisciplinary university with distinctive characteristics, mainly focusing on law, and also with economics, management, literature, engineering and other disciplines. It is known as the "Oriental Pearl of Legal Education".

The school currently has two campuses in Changning and Songjiang, covering an area of ​​more than 750,000 square meters; there are more than 18,000 students of various types and more than 1,300 faculty and staff; there are 22 colleges (departments) and more than 180 scientific research institutions; it has the right to confer doctoral degrees and master's degrees in the first-level disciplines of law and public administration, and the right to confer master's degrees in the first-level disciplines of applied economics, political science, Marxist theory, sociology, foreign languages ​​and literature, and journalism and communication. It has 16 second-level authorized disciplines for doctoral degrees, 46 second-level authorized disciplines for master's degrees, 24 undergraduate majors, and a postdoctoral mobile station for law. The university actively promotes the cultivation and construction of think tanks, improves knowledge innovation and social service capabilities, and cooperates with the Ministry of Justice to build a public legal service research base. It is the procuratorial basic theory research base of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Supreme People's Court Free Trade Zone Judicial Research Base, the Shanghai Education Legislation Consultation and Service Research Base, the China (Shanghai) Free Trade Zone Rule of Law Innovation Research Base, and the Legal Civilization Evolution Research Base are Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Innovation Research Bases. It co-organizes the "Yangtze River Delta Education Development Policy and Rule of Law Research Center" with the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and co-establishes the East China Procuratorial Research Institute, a judicial think tank research institution with the Procuratorial Theory Institute of the Supreme People's Procuratorate. The Institute of Foreign Law and Comparative Law, the Research Center for Rule of Law Guarantee of Government System Reform and Supervision Model Innovation, and the Economic Law Strategy Research Institute are key research bases for humanities and social sciences in Shanghai's general colleges and universities, and the Social Governance Research Institute is a knowledge service platform for Shanghai colleges and universities. In the 2012 discipline evaluation of the Degree and Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, the first-level discipline of law ranked among the top five in the country; in the 2016 discipline evaluation, law was rated A and political science was rated B. In 2018, the school was selected as a high-level local university in Shanghai. It is the largest legal document center in East China. The Chinese and foreign literati databases are among the best in law schools nationwide.
