Xiamen University

Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921 by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee. It is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in China's modern education history. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, sent a congratulatory letter to the university. The congratulatory letter pointed out that Xiamen University is a university with a glorious tradition. Over the past 100 years, the university has adhered to the aspirations of the patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee to establish the university, formed the excellent school spirit of "patriotism, revolution, self-reliance, and science", created a distinctive school-running feature, cultivated a large number of outstanding talents, and made positive contributions to the prosperity of the country, the happiness of the people, and the overseas dissemination of Chinese culture.

The school has Siming Campus, Zhangzhou Campus, Xiang'an Campus and Malaysia Branch, with a graduate school, 6 academic departments, 33 colleges (directly affiliated departments) and 16 research institutes, forming a discipline system covering 12 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, art and interdisciplinary disciplines. It has 5 first-level national key disciplines and 9 second-level national key disciplines. There are 32 postdoctoral mobile stations; 37 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 46 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees; 8 self-set second-level interdisciplinary disciplines; 2 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 29 master's professional degree authorization categories. In 2022, a total of 6 disciplines including education, chemistry, marine science, biology, ecology and statistics were selected into the list of world-class disciplines announced by the state.

The school currently has nearly 3,000 full-time teachers, of which professors and associate professors account for 74.3%. There are 32 academicians of the two academies (including 18 dual appointments), 1 senior professor of liberal arts, 4 academicians of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, 30 project leaders of the National Key R&D Program, 29 distinguished professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Program", 2 special post scholars, 23 young scholars, 60 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 38 leading talents of the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents, 17 young top talents, and 58 winners of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund; 11 national innovative research groups, 2 basic science center projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, 9 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, and 6 national teaching masters.

The school currently has more than 44,000 students, including more than 20,000 undergraduates, more than 18,000 master's students, and more than 5,000 doctoral students. The school's internal quality assurance system was selected as a typical case of "Excellent Principles and Innovative Practices in Internal Quality Assurance of Higher Education" by UNESCO. The school is the only university in China and East Asia to be selected. The school won 1 first prize and 15 second prizes in the sixth, seventh and eighth national higher education teaching achievements. 8 disciplines were selected as the 2.0 bases of the Ministry of Education's Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program, 11 majors (13 projects) were selected as the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Talent Education and Training Program; 44 majors were selected as national first-class professional construction points; 44 courses were selected as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses. The school was selected as the Ministry of Education's Course Ideological and Political Teaching Research Demonstration Center, and 2 courses were selected as the Ministry of Education's Course Ideological and Political Demonstration Courses. There are currently 6 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 national clinical teaching training demonstration center, and 3 national off-campus practical education bases for college students. 46 teachers were selected for the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Teaching Steering Committee from 2018 to 2022.

The school has more than 300 research institutions. Among them, there are 2 national collaborative innovation centers (leading units), 4 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national engineering laboratory, 2 national-local joint engineering research centers, 3 national-local joint engineering laboratories, 1 national industry-education integration innovation platform, 1 national field science observation and research station, 1 national high-end think tank (cultivation), 5 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 3 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 field science observation and research station of the Ministry of Education, and 5 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education.

The school has carried out in-depth foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has signed inter-school cooperation agreements with 259 overseas universities and carried out substantive exchanges and cooperation with 52 world-renowned universities. The school actively participates in international Chinese education, and has built 14 Confucius Institutes and 48 Confucius Classrooms in 12 countries on five continents. It is one of the Chinese partner institutions with the largest number of Confucius Institutes built and the widest distribution among the "Double First-Class" construction universities. In terms of exchanges with Taiwan, it has become a major center for Taiwan studies and a frontier for academic and cultural exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. In July 2014, Xiamen University Malaysia Campus laid the foundation stone, becoming China's first university to build an independent campus overseas. It was praised by the central media as a pearl inlaid on the "Belt and Road"; it has opened 22 undergraduate majors, 7 master's majors, and 4 doctoral majors, with more than 6,000 students and more than 500 faculty and staff, mainly from 33 countries and regions along the "Belt and Road".

Facing the new century, Xiamen University adheres to the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important congratulatory letter, and on the basis of building a world-renowned high-level research university, it strives to achieve the second centenary goal and build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and Xiamen University style. By 2035, it will be among the world's first-class universities; by the middle of this century, that is, by the centenary of the founding of New China, it will leap into the forefront of world-class universities.
