Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. It was established on May 26, 2000 by the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction. It is one of the key construction universities of the national "211 Project" and the "985 Project", and is one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" construction universities.

The school campus covers an area of ​​more than 7,000 acres. The park is lush with trees, green grass, elegant environment, beautiful scenery, and a green coverage rate of 72%. It is known as the "forest-style university". The school has a complete teaching and scientific research support system and complete public service facilities.

The school has a complete range of disciplines and a reasonable structure, and has basically built a discipline system for a comprehensive, research-oriented university. It has 11 major disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary disciplines; it has 109 undergraduate majors, 48 ​​first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 46 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, and 39 postdoctoral research stations. There are 7 national key disciplines in the first-level disciplines, 15 national key disciplines in the second-level disciplines (internal medicine and surgery are counted as three levels), and 7 national key (cultivation) disciplines. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 44 disciplines of our school participated in the evaluation and all made the list, including 4 disciplines such as mechanical engineering, optical engineering, biomedical engineering, and public health and preventive medicine, which entered A+, 14 A-level disciplines, and 33 B+ and above disciplines. 8 disciplines were selected into the first round of the national "Double First-Class" construction discipline list.

The school implements the "talent-driven school" strategy and has a strong faculty. There are more than 3,700 full-time teachers, including more than 1,400 professors and more than 1,400 associate professors; among the teachers, there are 20 academicians, 15 chief scientists of the "973 Program", 2 chief scientists of major scientific research programs, 101 chief scientists of national key R&D programs, 9 national teaching masters, and 43 selected candidates of the National Hundred Thousand Talents Program. There are 11 innovative research groups of the National Natural Science Foundation and 19 innovative teams of the Ministry of Education.

It has built major national scientific research bases such as Wuhan Optoelectronics National Research Center, National Pulsed High Magnetic Field Science Center, Precision Gravity Measurement Research Facility and National Digital Design and Manufacturing Innovation Center. It also has 4 national key laboratories, 1 national industry-education integration innovation platform, 7 national engineering (technology) research centers, 1 national clinical medicine research center, 1 national medical center, 2 national professional laboratories, 1 "Belt and Road" joint laboratory, 6 national international science and technology cooperation bases of the Ministry of Science and Technology and a number of provincial and ministerial scientific research bases.

The School of Engineering Science is one of the first four international demonstration colleges in the country, and the China-EU School of Clean and Renewable Energy is listed as one of the 40 typical cases of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU.

The affiliated Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital are large modern comprehensive hospitals integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and training. They are medical diagnosis and treatment centers in Hubei Province and even in the central and southern regions. The affiliated Liyuan Hospital highlights the characteristics of geriatrics and is the Hubei Provincial Geriatric Disease Prevention and Treatment Research Center.
