Shanxi University

Shanxi University is one of the universities with the longest history in China. It is a national "double first-class" university and a ministry-province joint university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Shanxi Provincial People's Government.

The predecessor of the school was the Shanxi University Hall founded in 1902. Its long cultural heritage can be traced back to the Jinyang Academy, Sanli Academy and Lingdetang Academy in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Shanxi University Hall Translation Academy founded by the school is the second translation academy founded by a modern university in China, which has effectively promoted cultural exchanges between China and the West. In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanxi University was home to many famous people and talents. From the Anti-Japanese War to the eve of the founding of New China, Shanxi University moved to many places and insisted on running schools. Many teachers and students participated in the Anti-Japanese War and devoted themselves to the democratic revolution, and sacrificed their blood and lives for national independence and people's liberation.

In the early days of the founding of New China, Shanxi University had six colleges, including literature, law, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine. The number of faculty and staff increased to more than 1,000, and the number of students reached nearly 2,200, making it a veritable socialist comprehensive university. In the 1950s, the Law School was renamed the School of Finance and Economics and merged into Renmin University of China, the Law Department was merged into Peking University, the Metallurgical Engineering Department was merged into Beijing Iron and Steel Institute, the Textile Engineering Department and the Mining Engineering Department were merged into Northwest Polytechnic Institute, and the Engineering College, Agricultural College, and Medical College were established independently. Shanxi University has made important contributions to the adjustment of the national higher education layout.

Since the reform and opening up, Shanxi University has achieved remarkable results in running schools, and has successively achieved a series of major breakthroughs such as doctoral programs, national key disciplines, national key laboratories, key research bases for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, academicians, and national science and technology awards. In 1998, Shanxi University became a key university in Shanxi Province; in 2005, it became one of the earliest universities jointly built by the province and the ministry; in 2012, it became a university selected for the "Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China". In 2018, it became a ministry-province-co-built university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shanxi Province. In 2022, it will be included in the ranks of national "Double First-Class" universities. The university currently has 19 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 35 first-level master's degree authorization points, 24 master's professional degree types, 14 postdoctoral mobile stations, 6 second-level doctoral and master's degree points outside the catalog, and 2 interdisciplinary doctoral and master's degree points. Philosophy and physics were selected as national "double first-class" construction disciplines. Philosophy of science and technology and optics were selected as national key disciplines. Chemistry, engineering, materials science, environment/ecology, physics, computer science and technology, botany and zoology, agricultural science and other 8 disciplines entered the top 1% of ESI. It has 1 national key laboratory, 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 2 provincial and ministerial co-construction collaborative innovation centers, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, 1 national and local joint engineering laboratory, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 3 "111" discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases, and 1 national international science and technology cooperation base.

Shanxi University adheres to the mission of cultivating morality and educating people, and cultivates talents from all over the world. There are 24,155 full-time undergraduates, 7,366 full-time postgraduates, 1,550 part-time postgraduates, and 977 full-time doctoral students. There are 87 undergraduate majors, covering 10 major disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, economics, management, law, education, and art. There are 23 national first-class majors and 19 provincial first-class majors. The physics major was selected as the 2.0 base of the Ministry of Education's Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program. Vigorously strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship education, build 3 national experimental teaching centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and be selected as the first batch of national innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration universities and the top 50 universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. In recent years, students have repeatedly achieved outstanding results in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition, Internet + College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, ASC World College Students' Supercomputing Competition and other competitions, and won nearly 130 national awards. More than ten gold, silver and bronze medals have been won in the Olympic Games, Asian Games, National Games and other events.

The university's ability to undertake major national scientific research projects is increasing. In recent years, it has undertaken a large number of major scientific research tasks, including the ground-based gravitational wave detection large scientific facility, the National Supercomputing (Taiyuan) Center, and the Shanxi Yellow River Laboratory. It has won nearly 20 national scientific research awards, including the National Natural Science Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the National Science and Technology Invention Award, and the First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences Research in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, it undertook 14 national key projects such as the National Key R&D Program Project, 444 National Natural Science Foundation Projects, and 306 National Social Science Foundation Projects and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Projects of the Ministry of Education. It has vigorously strengthened the cooperation between industry, academia and research, promoted the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and cooperated with state-owned backbone enterprises to jointly build more than a dozen industrial technology research institutes. It has established strategic cooperative relations with more than a dozen cities in Shanxi Province. The school was selected as one of the "first batch of colleges and universities for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements" by the Ministry of Education, and the Shanxi University Science and Technology Park has become a national university science and technology park.

Shanxi University regards the construction of the teaching staff as an important basic work. Shanxi University currently has three campuses, including Wucheng Campus, Dongshan Campus, and Dadongguan Campus, with a total area of ​​3,008 acres and a building area of ​​1.1664 million square meters. It is a national civilized campus, a garden unit in Shanxi Province, and a green school. The school's current teaching and scientific research equipment assets are worth 1.356 billion yuan, and the number of undergraduate teaching experimental equipment has reached 21,259 units (sets).
