Taiyuan University of Technology is located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province. It is a full-time undergraduate university managed by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government, focusing on engineering and featuring engineering applications. It covers eight major disciplines, including engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, art, and education. It supports and coordinates the development of multiple disciplines. It is a university supported by the national "13th Five-Year Plan" application-oriented undergraduate industry-education integration development project planning project, the first batch of pilot universities determined by Shanxi Province to transform into an application-oriented university, and a demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Shanxi Province.

The school was founded in 1954. Its predecessor was the Fifth Industrial School of North China. It was a national key technical secondary school established during the first "Five-Year Plan" period of my country to meet the needs of national defense construction. It was upgraded to a junior college in 1988 and began to recruit undergraduates in 1999. In March 2007, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and independently set up as a full-time general undergraduate school and renamed "Taiyuan Industrial College". In 2015, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education. Over the past 67 years, the school has inherited the spirit of self-improvement and dedication, practiced the school motto of "unity of knowledge and action, and actions speak louder than words", and cultivated more than 90,000 outstanding talents with high comprehensive quality, solid professional foundation and strong practical ability for the national defense industry and national economic construction.

The school covers an area of ​​392,700 square meters and a total construction area of ​​356,000 square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 921 million yuan, of which the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 243 million yuan. The library has a collection of 2.03 million books (including electronic books). All kinds of teaching, living, sports and other facilities are complete, and various supporting service facilities are constantly improving.

The school has 13 departments including the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electronic Engineering, Department of Automation, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Department of Computer Engineering, Department of Environmental and Safety Engineering, Department of Materials Engineering, Department of Science, Department of Economics and Management, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Design and Art, Department of Law, and Department of Physical Education, and 2 teaching departments including the Department of Ideological and Political Theory Teaching and Research and the Department of Continuing Education. There are 47 undergraduate majors, recruiting students from 28 provinces (cities and regions) across the country, and 17,598 full-time students. There are 1,113 faculty members, including 912 full-time teachers, 253 teachers with senior professional titles, including 3 second-level professors; 839 teachers with master's degrees or above. Among them, there is one national outstanding educator, one person selected for the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, one provincial outstanding teaching team, nine Shanxi "131" leading talents, two outstanding young academic leaders of Shanxi colleges and universities, six famous teachers in Shanxi Province, 10 "Sanjin Talents" in the field of education in Shanxi Province, more than 100 "dual-qualified" teachers, and one academic and technical leader in Shanxi Province. At the same time, the school also hired well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad as honorary professors, specially appointed professors, part-time professors and visiting professors, two specially appointed academicians, one Yangtze River Scholar, and one UAV system team.

The school carries out applied undergraduate education and teaching around the school-running philosophy of "establishing morality, strengthening practice, highlighting application, and serving the society". The school continues to accelerate the construction of majors related to regional (industry) leading industries and strategic emerging industries, and gradually forms a new pattern of coordinated development of six major subject groups and leading the development of the school with discipline and professional construction. It has one of the first batch of comprehensive reform pilot majors of local colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education in the "Undergraduate Teaching Project", two advantageous majors of higher education institutions in Shanxi Province, five provincial characteristic majors, five provincial first-class professional construction sites, five provincial key support disciplines, and one provincial "1331 Project" key discipline construction plan advantage and characteristic discipline. There is one national-level quality course, one national-level first-class undergraduate course, 10 provincial-level quality resource sharing courses, 6 provincial-level first-class courses recognized, 7 courses under construction, and 11 courses under cultivation, 6 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial-level virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 2 virtual simulation experimental recognition projects, 1 construction project, and 1 provincial-level talent training model innovation experimental zone. The school has 16 teaching experimental centers, 7 central and local co-construction laboratory projects, and more than 300 off-campus internship and training bases. Textbooks such as "Visual C++ Programming and Computer Guidance" have been included in the national planning textbooks and have won many teaching reform awards at all levels, including the National College Teachers Teaching Innovation Competition, Shanxi Province Teaching Achievement Award, and the Middle-aged and Young Teachers Teaching Basic Skills Competition.

In 2019, the school was approved as a "provincial entrepreneurship and innovation demonstration base" in Shanxi Province, becoming the fifth "college and research institute" innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration construction unit in our province. The school has built two provincial entrepreneurship and innovation spaces, "Lean Manufacturing" and "Zero One entrepreneurship and innovation space". Taking the approval of the provincial entrepreneurship and innovation demonstration base as an opportunity, the school continues to deepen the school-running characteristics of "promoting teaching through practice and promoting learning through competition", comprehensively improve the quality of talent training with ability orientation, and improve the "national-regional-provincial-institute" discipline competition system. The discipline competition has achieved remarkable results. The school's robot team won the championship of the 13th National College Student Robot Competition and was awarded the "Shanxi Youth May Fourth Award" by the Provincial Youth League Committee. In 2021, students participated in the 16th National College Student Intelligent Automobile Competition (National Finals) and won 6 first prizes; won 1 first prize in the Northwest Division of the 4th National College Student Chemical Experiment Competition; won 1 first prize in the 15th National College Student Chemical Design Competition; won two golds, three silvers and one bronze in the China College Student Engineering Practice and Innovation Ability Competition; and won 4 second prizes in the 14th China College Student Computer Design Competition. The results of the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the National College Student Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, the China College Student Football League, the National College Student Rock Climbing Competition, the China College Student Basketball League, and the Shanxi Province Xingjin Challenge Cup College Student Entrepreneurship Competition are among the best in the province. In March 2021, the school ranked 89th in the "Top 300 National Ordinary College Student Competition Rankings (Undergraduate) from 2016 to 2020", up 35 places from the previous year, and ranked 69th in the "2020 National Ordinary College Subject Competition Rankings (Undergraduate)", and has been in the top 100 list of single-year rankings for three consecutive years. In May 2021, the Engineering Education Committee of the China Higher Education Society released the "National University Robot Competition Index 2020 Edition", and the college has been in the top 10% of the National Undergraduate University Robot Competition Index for two consecutive years.

The school follows the principle of "demand-oriented, deep integration", strengthens the cross-disciplinary (group) and promotes the integrated development of "production, learning, research and application". With the construction of collaborative innovation centers as a carrier, we will continue to strengthen external exchanges and cooperation; deepen close ties and resource sharing with scientific research institutes, industry enterprises and other universities; introduce various social resources, gather innovative elements, stimulate innovation vitality, and promote the school's talent training, discipline construction, scientific research and social services. "Four-in-one" coordinated development, further promote Shanxi's regional economic development and industrial transformation and upgrading. In 2017, the Collaborative Innovation Center for New Functional Materials was identified as a Class B supplementary construction project of the Shanxi Province "1331 Project" Collaborative Innovation Center Construction Plan (first batch). In 2018, the Energy Storage New Materials Discipline Group was successfully approved as a cultivation project for the Shanxi Province Service Industry Innovation Discipline Group Construction Plan. In 2018, the Engineering Research Center for Clean and Renewable Energy Engineering Technology Development was selected into the Shanxi Province "1331 Project" Engineering (Technology) Research Center Construction Plan. In 2020, the Shanxi Province Digital Design and Manufacturing Technology Innovation Center and the Shanxi Province Energy Storage Materials Technology Innovation Center were approved as "New R&D Institutions for Industry, University and Research in Shanxi Province's Industry and Information Technology Field". The number and quality of monographs, SCI, and EI papers have increased year by year, the number of authorized patents and award-winning scientific and technological achievements has increased significantly, the channels for scientific research project establishment have been continuously broadened, and the horizontal contract funds have increased significantly, especially in the National Natural Science Foundation projects and other aspects. Continuous breakthroughs have been made, and the ability to serve regional economic and social development has been continuously improved.

The school implements the "Internationalization Strategic Project", actively expands international exchange channels, continuously increases the intensity of international exchanges and cooperation, accelerates the internationalization process, and improves the level of internationalized school management. It has successively carried out international exchanges and cooperation in multi-level and two-way talent training with dozens of universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Russia, South Korea, etc., creating good conditions for students to go abroad, teachers to exchange and study abroad, and introduce high-quality foreign teaching and research resources.
